To me spy or not, it's whatever. Go ahead. It's not like you're putting me in jail or something.

All these freedom dudes are always complaining but using Facebook anyway.......

And yo, $60 for glasses?! No way.

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

I agree. As long as they don't use it to lock us up in the future when the crazies take over.

I definitely get ghosted on my google searches with advertisements. It does feel a little invasive.. but it's something I have gotten use to. Lately it seems like its gotten worse though.

It actually blew a birthday surprise for my wife recently.. I searched for a specific coffee mug she wanted, and then while I was on Reddit , she saw the advertisement for the mug I was looking for. She was like "Whoa no way! That's the mug I want!" She didn't realize I was being ghosted at first and thought it was a coincidence, but I had to tell her haha. It was a very specific mug.

Also, I had totally forgotten about Spy Vs. Spy comic strips until you posted the photo. What a throwback!

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

yeah, that's another tactic used commonly - search for something once and then it shows up fucking EVERYWHERE.

they could definitely use an upgrade on that tactic, though - more than once, I ended up buying the thing, and was still getting shown the ads weeks later...

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

Well, that explains why suddenly all of California is being advertised Wifebeaters.

Lol... Ok, may have gone too far in this joke, but this feature is indeed prone to hilarious results.

Finally, to be honest with you big bro, the difference between the $10 and $60 glass shows.

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

yeah, it does.

if they're truly as sexy in person as in the pics, I'll probably end up getting a couple after testing the ones I get for my dad...

I'm a simple man, i see Whiskey Glass, I read post.
I have known all about Facebook shenanigans a while now. Tis indeed a shame. Good thing there's alternatives again.

But as far whiskey glasses go, I would also like to suggest an occasional work of art can be discovered at your local thrift store. Sometimes there's sweet sweet finds at the Goodwill. Sounds Janky, but that's me, Janky Jake. But seriously, some of those antique stores have sweet finds. And they'll might cost you a lil less steem. :)

I always feel this thing, like i try to watch something and you see it in your feeds on facebook or website adds. But I guess it's not spying, may be it could be our unintentional clicks that could lead them to our taste.
But yeah really an interesting observation.

Hello @rok-sivante

This is unbelievable and certainly my first time of hearing such.

The e-marketing team of Facebook and Google must be wizards! Looking at how they eventually got you to decide getting for Papa as a special gift to be handed on Father's Day.

Marketing strategies playing on people and I wonder how many people had fallen their way through this.... Certainly a Lotta, if I guess right..

Very interesting information. I love the messages and benefits in your writing. I'm not sure about that yet. However, my friend has just told me after reading your post. With the Facebook Messenger app, Facebook gets the network data which we use. Facebook uses this app to get an analysis of almost everything done on your smartphone. I think we need to be careful and wise in using social media. Have a nice day..

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

sorry, my english is a bit chaotic...

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

This sounded like a sci fi thing. But as you said, if people agree to the terms and conditions they are giving permission for things like this to happen.

At least in this case the ad was good for you! And that glass was indeed good looking!

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

I agree with what you describe, as you have already explained that FB's social media is spying on its users, this is very likely because the system in use always monitors and monitors every act of violence, threats and criminality, sometimes continue to monitor our movements every time.

Regard brother @rok-sivante

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

hahaha. does facebook have spies? I do not really understand about this yet.

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

Is it wrong by the Facebook side, when they are spying on someone? is this an abuse?

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

I agree with your opinion in this post sir @rok-sivante

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

Haha I remember this incident of fb where two chat bots started sending each other messagea that were so harx to interpretation which lead to mark Zuckerberg to stop that this was on news so much that fb got free promotion....... Steemit does not require any such news steem ia the best!!

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

Oh wow, that is actually quite creepy.
And to think that I always just click the
"I have read and agreed to the terms and conditions" box.

But, that is a fine glass. Pretty sure your dad would appreciate.

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

Not even 10 minutes later, what shows up in my Instagram feed...?

Just couldnt stop laughing upon seeing this at first, but seriously their market ads is really something and just makes one to ask

Is there still privacy?

Eek, creepy stuff, @rok-sivante; I knew Google was up to it, but not FB. Though the more I think of it, with all their meddling & tailoring of info, itโ€™s not startling... And, I like how you end on a note of โ€˜there might be beauty & inspiration here, tooโ€™!

By the way, been using @dsound more for my poetry readings and emboldened by your encouragement in the past, would love to collaborate ๐Ÿค“

Might I send you a poetry reading & you add a soundscape?

A meaningful post so that we from the use of Facebook to be a lesson, thank you very much

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

But!!!! You wrote about it and made some fresh steem. Sucket Facebook!!!!

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

I gotta say I've heard of this happening, but haven't experienced yet myself. It actually sounds like a positive experience though - once you get past the stalker factor. I imagine in another 20 years no one will even care. In fact they might just make comments to give FB/Google some idea what they do want to see as ads. Consumerism at its best.

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

When it comes to advertising you see on Facebook, Google and so on, it's not really them deciding to target you, but the advertisers themselves. Their ad networks allow access to you and the ability to target people by interests. The fact that you were talking about whiskey before is more likely a coincidence.

Still, the fact that the advertiser managed to sell you this really expensive product, shows that their targeting can be used really well.

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

no way its coincidence.

I've heard about this happening to others too many times. I had NOT been searching for anything related to whiskey. no way its chance.

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

When you advertise, it's up to you to try and guess who are the people that might be interested in what you are advertising, so you don't advertise just to people who have searched for the specific term. So you try to guess and target the right people on other demographic data.

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย (edited)

Yeah, Iโ€™ve studied marketing, I know.

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

@rok-sivante how many versions of whiskey in the world?

Understandably I do not ever drink water that is intoxicating ๐Ÿ˜

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

It's very unlikely that you were actually spied on by A.I. in this case. Think about it this way.

You probably see at least 20 ads per day which gives you 7300 different ads per year. You probably talk about at least 5 distinct topics per day which gives you at least 1825 topics you talk about on yearly basis. It means that for the calendar year there are 7300 changes to hit just one of those 1825 different topics at the right time. It might sound like quite the unlikely coincidence, but it's actually fairly likely for it to happen to us at least once a year given this situation.

It's like the Birthday Paradox, we are pretty bad at estimating the correct chances of something seemingly unlikely actually happening. (I hope you don't mind me linking to a 3 weeks old post of mine here).

Confession: half the thanks oughta go to @biophil, as some of my curation has been going through his bot.

Though, looks like it is some good stuff of yours itโ€™s been posting on, so happy to not have to revoke the votes - and I appreciate the message of thanks.

Keep up the good work... ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’“
