Metaverse
The metaverse has the potential to open up new creative, social, and economic possibilities. And it will be shaped by Europeans from the start "In a blog post, Facebook stated.
In the next years, I expect people to shift their perceptions of us from a social media firm to a metaverse company.
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, has been a strong proponent of the "metaverse," a virtual reality version of the internet that the company envisions as the way of the future.
The metaverse, short for "meta-universe," is a digital world in which the real and virtual collide in a science fiction concept that allows individuals to roam between gadgets and converse in a virtual reality.
It refers to augmented and virtual reality goods and services in practice..
Facebook stated in a blog post on Monday that it aims to recruit 10,000 workers across Europe to help construct the metaverse.
Today, we're launching a five-year plan to generate 10,000 new high-skilled jobs across the European Union (EU)."
The social media behemoth also said that investing in the EU had several benefits, including access to a vast consumer market, world-class colleges, and top-tier talent.
What is the metaverse?
The word refers to a cyberspace that is similar to physical reality and in which a group of people may interact through avatars. In his 1992 science fiction novel "Snow Crash," author Neal Stephenson invented the term. It It's when physical, augmented, and virtual reality collide in a shared online area.
Some video game communities, such as Roblox (a platform with a plethora of games made by children and teens) and Fortnite, have already begun to produce the seeds of meta-universes (a shooter and survival game that boasts 350 million players).
More than 12 million players saw five virtual performances by musician Travis Scott, who appeared as an avatar in Fortnite, in April.
Screens, holograms, virtual reality headsets, and augmented reality glasses would gradually allow fluid "movements" of virtual universes in real-world locations, a process Zuckerberg compared to "teleportations."
'The ultimate social technology
Facebook earlier announced the formation of a product team dedicated on metaverse-related topics.
"I anticipate people to shift from perceiving us primarily as a social media business to seeing us as a metaverse company in the coming years," Zuckerberg remarked in July.
"In many respects, the metaverse is the pinnacle of social expression." Facebook, the world's most popular social media platform, has substantially invested in virtual reality and augmented reality, purchasing gear like the Oculus VR headset and developing AR glasses and wristband technology.
It has also acquired a number of virtual reality game firms, including BigBox VR. According to The Information in March, it has roughly 10,000 staff working on virtual reality.
Zuckerberg has stated that he believes it is prudent to spend heavily in the development of what he believes will be the next great computer platform.
In a July Facebook post, he wrote, "I think the'metaverse' will be the successor to the mobile internet, and launching this product group is the next step in our journey to help develop it."
He told The Verge in July: "If we do this well, I think over the next five years or so ... we will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a 'metaverse' company".
