Net neutrality rules target telcos and ISPs because of their dodgy practices making consumers suffer especially in the rural areas. Users mainly utilize the internet to find services, products, research, and to look for a job. However, disseminating one’s personal information is a different story.
Facebook and Cambridge Analytica are now dealing with a class action lawsuit along with two other companies. This is in lieu of the professed exploitation of personal information of not less than 71 million people.
According to the lawsuit, the said companies acquired the users’ personal information from Facebook to establish “political propaganda campaigns” in the United Kingdom and the United States.
The social media network might have been deceived. The point is, it is not responsible enough to secure the personal information of its users. This consist of about a million British and 70.6 million American users. The information was initially adopted in the British EU referendum followed by the US 2016 presidential election.
The other two involved companies are named SCL Group Limited and Global Science Research Limited (GSR). Two people are also included, namely Steve Bannon (former White House adviser) and Aleksandr Kogan (founding director of GSR and Cambridge University neuroscientist).
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg even admitted that Cambridge Analytica acquired his personal profile when asked by Rep. Anna Eschoo of California. However, it is not certain if he installed the “thisisyourdigitallife” app. Also, t is not understood if his personal information was gathered from one or more of his friends.
