This strange beachwear accessory first surfaced in 2004. Since then, it has seen a huge boom along the beaches of Shangdong.
Its Purpose Is To Protect
It is mostly worn by people who are very paranoid about the effect of sun on their skin. You may not know this, but in Chinese culture it is imperative to keep your skin as white as possible, as tanning is seen as ugly or lower class.
For Some Reason They Don't Want To Wear Hats
So these things are apparently for people who have never heard of hats. Or sunscreen, for that matter.
They Are Trying To Make It Cool
Dermatologists are trying their best to make facekinis seem cool, but will they ever spread from the beaches of Shangdong? Probably not.
