Though she was born a Delaware Indian, Nancy Ward (1738-1822) was made "Beloved woman" by Cherokees and sat on their Council of Chiefs after taking command in a successful battle with the Creeks. After she married a white man, in 1760, she used her influence to keep peace with his people and to put the Cherokees' interest first.
