The current facts show that the literacy condition of Indonesian society is still apprehensive. The UNDP findings are surprising that adult literacy rates in Indonesia are only 65.5 percent, while Malaysia has 86.4 percent. On the other hand, the fact of reading Indonesians is also still apprehensive because ideally 1 newspaper reads 10 people, but in Indonesia 1 newspaper read by 45 people, even lost to Sri Lanka, 1 newspaper read by 38 people and in Philippines 1 newspaper read by 30 people. In addition, PISA also placed the reading position of Indonesian students in the order of 57 out of 65 countries studied.
The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) (2016) released its research on Indonesians who wanted to get new information by reading only 23.5 percent of the total population while watching television by 85.9 percent and listening to the radio by 40.3 percent. The tendency to get information through reading stagnant since 1993, only rose about 0.2 percent. Far when compared with watching television that increase percentage reached 211.1 percent.
The irony now, the level of student literacy is low. Students need to jack up the reading level. Scientifically popular books should have been widely literated. However, librarian reports in schools, students only review books for less than 10% of the total number of books collected. In addition, the writing rate of students is also very low. Only 24% of students make their own exposition, explanation, negotiation, and complex text texts, the rest is the result of adaptations.
