The word politics is derived from Greek word Polis' meaning a city state. In the city states Greeks experimented various forms of government and finally retained democracy as the best forni of government. Demos' is a Greek word meaning people and Kratia meaning power. Thus democracy means power of the people. Plato the author of the' Republic, the 'Statesman' and the 'Laws', made substantial contribution to political thought. Aristotle said that the aim of the government should be the promotion of welfare and happiness of the people. It as he who said that man is a social as well as political animal.
