The reason why democracy will always lead to totalitarianism ... ALWAYS

Democracy will always lead to totalitarianism because there is a bug in the system, and eventually a hacker will take advantage.

Let's make some assumptions.

In the long run, a democracy will stabilize to one of the following:

1. 1 Party dominates. We've seen many examples of this already, from the extreme of China (obviously not a democracy, but they pretend to be), so numerous cities that have been voting Democratic for generations. When you have only one party, then it is easy for a hacker with resources to dominate the party and thus move the party towards totalitarian doctrine.

2. 2 parties dominate. This is a more interesting case. The classic example here is the United States, where the democrats and republicans dominate and keep all other parties from participating. This case however is no more difficult for a hacker with resources. A hacker takes over one party and then pushes that Party towards your doctrine. Even if the party of the hacker has values completely antithetical to the general population, the party will remain viable as long as the barriers for parties to enter remains high. And at a local enough level, the politics and vigor of the candidates will not be in sync with the party doctrine. So how do the hackers win an election despite their party not representing the values of the people. It's very simple, they turn every election into a 1-issue election, or you make the election about a specific candidate. And then you wait. Eventually you will have an event where the ruling party becomes so unpopular for issues completely unrelated to their policies or the results. For example, you could have a scandal similar to Nixon, or God-forbid, you could have an event similar to JFK or Lincoln.
