After his third missionary journey, the apostle Paul saw the possibility of preaching the gospel in Italy and Spain, and so, with the idea of traveling to Rome, the apostle addressed a letter to the Christians of the capital of the empire.
In the Letter to the Romans, the apostle Paul began his letter by teaching about the relationship between the law of Moses and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. For Paul, this was a very important issue, since the differences between Christians coming from Judaism and paganism had threatened a schism, and thus the need for the first council of Jerusalem arose. The apostle Paul even on this subject as related in the Book of Acts had bitter discussions with other apostles, including Peter, the first pope.
According to Paul's theological thought, the law has no significance because the new promises imply a change of lifestyle; the life according to the spirit with the promise of the eternal life has no relation with a set of imperatives or orders. In this sense the apostle Paul laid the foundations for a completely new way of thinking, Christianity was not an extension of Judaism, but a new and different religion centered on the person of Jesus.
This is why Paul defended the importance of the sacrament of baptism over circumcision and he did so based on the importance of the new promises that are born of the gift of faith and not of the law: "Everything depends on having faith in God, so that God's promise is assured by his gift of undeserved grace" Romans 4:16. It is important to remember that baptism is the passage from a life full of sins to a life of righteousness ("Always do for other people everything you want them to do for you" Matthew 7:12), and it is this spiritual change that is related to the free grace of God as explained by the apostle in his epistle.
With Jesus, a new wisdom emerged among men because the Kingdom of God, the empire or dominion of the divine perfections, does not belong to intellectuals or those who boast of being wise but to those who are born again and become children of the light.
