The apostle Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians spoke about the importance of the gift of faith and the communion with Christ to live according to the dictates of the spirit, and thus avoid the inclinations of the flesh. Because if men serve the flesh, that is, the lust and the love for money for example, men cannot enter into the Kingdom of God, the empire or dominion of God's perfections.
And the apostle Paul gave as an example the story of the journey of the Israelites to the promised land, Canaan; in a metaphorical sense God offered the Israelites food, the manna, and water to enter in communion with him, but not everyone accepted with a good heart this merciful offering, and so ruin came to many, with these words Paul explained this truth: "Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did" 1 Corinthians 10:5-6.
That is why Lord Jesus, to help mankind, offers the Eucharist instituted at the Last Supper, so that the true believers in his spiritual kingdom may be one with him, and thus have the strength to avoid sin. Jesus gave to mankind this bread and this wine that symbolize the love of God and the union of all believers in a single spiritual body; in this consists the true spiritual perfection.
Paul called the first christians of Corinth to live in the grace of God, always taking into account the value of this communion, that our Lord Jesus gives to mankind:
"Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf" 1 Corinthians 10:16-17.
