Faith begins with preaching, with hearing. But this faith cannot be based on merely human knowledge: "so that you faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God's power.", 1 Corinthians 2:5.
For this reason, faith is accompanied by a special wisdom:
"We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we declare God's wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." 1 Corinthians 2:6-8
Wisdom is the knowledge of the correct means to live, when this wisdom comes from experience we say that it is a wisdom of the world or of man; and when this wisdom comes from divine inspiration we say that it is the "word of God" or the "wisdom of God": listen (perceive with attention), meditate with intuition and inspiration, decide with creativity and discernment.
And this mysterious wisdom announced before the creation of the world has a purpose: to grant men the "perfection of knowledge":
"These are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person's thought except their own Spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us." 1 Corinthians 2:10-12
The scriptures are intended to teach us the mysteries of God. What the apostle is saying in the letter is that "wisdom is the mother of all mysteries", that the wisdom of God orders the functioning of all things, even the things that men hide in their thoughts. This is why there is no greater good than receiving the holy spirit, the spirit of God, it is by this spirit that we understand all things. Faith, when we receive the holy spirit, is transformed into trust in God and mercy into perseverance, the daily determination of doing good avoiding evil.
