Saul was the first king of Israel succeeding the judges as the system of government in the promised land; and Saul, as the scriptures relate, was a distinguished person and a great warrior who always showed courage before his army. But the Bible tells us how the Lord punished Saul for disobedience and rejected him as king of Israel. Being faithful to God is a requirement to be blessed by him, but King Saul did not obey the word of the Lord transmitted by the prophet Samuel. The sin of King Saul was a very common sin among the kings of Israel and Judah in ancient times, to fear men and not God.
The Lord through the words of the prophet Samuel ordered Saul to punish the Kingdom of Amalek for having acted against the Israelites when they arrived in Canaan: "I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them" 1 Samuel 15:2-3.
Saul did so, but he kept everything he found of value in that Kingdom and distributed it among his army, this displeased the Lord; and thus the word of the Lord came to Samuel: "I regret that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions" 1 Samuel 15:11.
And with these words Samuel communicated with Saul, when the King arrogantly tried to hide his sin:
"Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the LORD?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
For rebellion is like the sin of divination,
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the LORD,
he has rejected you as king" 1 Samuel 15:22-23.
With this story, the Bible teaches us that the sustenance of spirituality in man is the fear of God, and those men, like Saul, that sooner or later lose this fear, end up leaving the Law of Moses and the words of the prophets aside.
