Laughter is the best medicine

I am back. What a week! Seems that everyone got sick with the flu, we are busy preparing for the upcoming strike season at work, I started to get everything ready for my new business and then hubby is still working night shift.
Today I want to tell you about our own unique point system. If you read my introduction you would know that my brother, Phillip is blind. He wasn’t born blind, so it was and still is an adjustment for all of us. He however has an amazing sense of humor and I think laughing is what kept us sane through the whole ordeal.

Now back to the point system. We all tend to say things like “I didn’t see that….” Which is a bit of a joke to Phillip and he would always reply “me neither”. So we started a point system, every time you say or do something hilariously inappropriate or clever you get rewarded points. Here are the top five point scoring moments.

Quinton is the silent type, he will always just sit and listen to us babbling on. Problem with that he nods or shakes his head when Phillip asks him a question. Yes, you can imagine the miscommunication there. Five points to Quinton every single time.

I am short 1.5 m and Phillip 1.9. So when I lead him around he tends to either run into branches or has to almost crawl down stairs. Needless to say he was blind for about a month when I ran him into the first branch. Still feel horrible about that, but it did get me my nickname “Frodo”, and he laughs it off as “branching problems”. Five points to Phillip.
Then there is my mom. We have a lot of power outages or load-shedding, so what was the first thing my mom did when the power went out, she ran to Phillip because she was worried about him in the dark. Five points Corrie.

One of my favorites would be the day the boys went to the hardware. Phillip held on to the trolley handles, Quinton Jr was in the trolley and Quinton pulling from the front. Every time Quinton wanted to get something he would tell Phillip to stop. So he was off to get nails, when he heard a loud bang. He turned around to find that Phillip and Quinton Jr ran into the display at the end of the isle. Quinton Jr decided he didn’t want to wait for his dad and told Phillip he can start pushing again his dad was back.

Then there is the two hundred point moment that was rewarded to Shawn. Phillip likes to still try everything, ten pin bowling, darts and list goes on. One day he decided he wants to play poker. Shawn joined him and the two swiftly and very professional took a seat at the table. You have to know Shawn cannot play poker and decided to follow Phillip’s lead. Phillip picked up his cards, stared at it intently and rubbed his chin, gave his instructions, looked very carefully at the cards and folded. Shawn followed blindly. After the round was done, Phillip asked Shawn in front of everyone where his stick was, but on his glasses and stood up to be lead away. It goes without saying that everyone was so shocked that he played poker. Problem was he had no idea what he was doing, and Shawn just followed thinking he knew exactly what he was going on. They lost two hundred rand that day but gained a priceless memory.
