Determining the definition of family in any human culture is a challenging, if not impossible, task.

Diverse historical contexts have shaped how cultures have perceived the concept of family and given it distinct interpretations.

For example, the interwoven "Big Family" structure of tribe, lineage, tribe, and clan is common in prehistoric societies or in the period both during and after the emergence of the family unit.

This Order is followed immediately by the "Extended Family" Order, which includes the grandfather, grandmother, aunt, and uncle. In modern societies, the concept of a nuclear family—a unit consisting solely of parents and children—remains relevant.

The modern family arose as a result of social progress, the expansion of awareness of freedom and democracy, and the acceptance of gender equality.
