I was taken aback today by the numbers of kids in foster care.
The background, the report of Missing and Murdered women came out today officially and it’s created a lot of debate online as to what the definition of Genocide is.
I didn’t want to become involved but there were a few people that wanted the figures on how many First Nations kids were in the system. (I wonder why people ask what they are rather than going to look)
I figured because I have an interest in fixing the system the best thing to do was help with education.
Easily googled.
And easily startled.
The screen cap is what comes up first, the 52.2 percent number I already knew; That’s not out of line from other previous figures.
It’s the numbers next to that. 4300 kids below the age of four across the country.
But ten thousand kids in Manitoba in the system. To put that in perspective... there’s only 7 thousand people in the town I grew up in. That means five thousand of them are First Nations... not bad when natives only make up 2% of the population.
There are more kids in the system than people living around me.
14 thousand First Nations kids under the age of 15 live in foster homes... that’s based on the census which didn’t reveal how many between 15 and 19 live are in foster care. That also doesn’t account for the FN kids living in Motels and Hotels as they aren’t included in the census.
Which is going to drive me crazy until I find a figure, but most articles point out that isn’t released.
Canada needs more social programs.
Side note. Reading the MMIW report, There’s quite a few points of interest in it concerning missing kids that disappear while inside the Foster Care System.
It also makes 230 recommendations, Including a few that apply to Kids and the system, and enforcing their human rights.
Such as an ombudsman that can enforce laws and protections. I’d like to see that happen
That said. I passed on the numbers to the individual asking; No response to it yet so I have to wait to see where the discussion goes.
