Government just announced they’re going to make a law so natives are in charge of their own foster care system.
So background is in the article
And they say the right things about getting kids out of care and home so their parents are supported. They’re also taking the financial incentive to kidnap kids out of the system.
But I have some concerns.
First. No oversight.
I live on a reserve where the council embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars because Inac didn’t have any oversight (RCMP is investigating both the council and INAC now).
So there’s been no discussion about oversight in this law, Which is the problem they got into in Manitoba when they handed the foster system over to the Metis society.
There needs to be a separate body whose job is to watch over the system to make sure kids don’t fall through the cracks.
