The basics from the article.
Over the last few years Child Advocates including the Caring Society have taken the Government of Canada to The Human Rights Tribunal in order to show Canada is messing up the Child Services.
The advocates won. Repeatedly and have gotten orders from the judges to fix the system.
The tribunal has also ordered that victims of the Child Services system be compensated for the damage and hurt they had to go through in the system.
The reason for the damages isn’t just to compensate them, but is to force the government to act in the ruling and make sure the damage doesn’t happen to anybody else.
Except two things are happening.
The Government has not shown any evidence that they have taken steps to fix the system, but they are now arguing that yes they did the damage, but they shouldn’t have to pay the damages.
It’s a pointless fight, the Courts have already set precedence in the past over the argument the lawyers are making not to pay.
At the end of the day the ruling will just follow the same steps it always does.
So why is the government doing this?
Seems to us that it’s a stalling trick, one designed to just cost the society funds that they could be using elsewhere. They’re just delaying the cause of what’s happing, and at the end of the day the compensation is still going to have to be paid out.
Meanwhile... the kids still in the system are still going through this crap waiting for the government to step up.
