The other day I mentioned in a post about Foster Kids that it bothered me that turned 18, they would be out on their own and no longer part of the system. This event was known as "aging out."
Once out they would have no money for food, housing or education; Which to some people is part of life, only for those that didn't grow up in the system life meant having parental support.
So i opened my Facebook today to come across this...
The Government of British Columbia has announced that people aging out of the Foster System would not have to pay for post secondary education.
With conditions. Ages 18 to 26 are only eligible... so I'm hoping that in those years if they want to become a doctor they learn how to become financially solvent enough for the few years after.
I'm nit picking...
The article mentions that there's more coming later, which I hope includes funding for homes even if they're low cost; at least for the first few years.
Job placement programs for when they go to school.
That said... it's a good start in the right direction.
I'd also like to see what they announce for kids in the system, if you're not aware there's still children in BC living in motels completely unsupervised... a few of which were able to commit suicide easily.
its about time someone started to do something... if they are, and not just saying it.
