A Fan-tastic Summer Solution

Every now and then, the weather starts to get warm and it’s a great time to go out and enjoy some wonderful sunshine with a cold brew. Except, I can’t really go out at the moment and most of my socialising is now done from the comfort of home. As the summer months warm up, the heat waves start to roll in. My place doesn’t have an air conditioning unit and keeping my windows and doors open as wide as possible can only do so much. Working at my desk on a daily basis has really made me feel the need to invest in something that will keep me cooler during this humid and stuffy months as lockdown measures continue.

Luckily I had a fan hanging around that I hadn’t used in years. A small desk fan seems retro now and probably energy inefficient. I decided to give it a whirl anyway and for the most part, I felt a great breeze for a while. However, as fan usage extended beyond a couple of hours, a few problems began to emerge. My eyes began to water, most likely due to getting dried out in the direct air. I had not considered this downside to using a directed fan and this wasn’t the only issue that popped up during fan use. Repetitive sneezing became apparent after a while and I could only link these two problems to fan usage. I don’t suffer from hay fever but the directed dry air and dusty blowing around my room was simply too much to handle and I had to rethink my cooling strategy.

Aside from drinking plenty of water as my body started to sweat once again, I thought it was time to take a look at the latest in fan technology. Without an air conditioning unit, the next best thing was needed. Enter the bladeless fan. I had seen these units a number of times at friend’s places, a number of manufacturers including Dyson, Xiaomi and others have brought offerings to the market. Circulation technology has come a long way and these units are capable of delivering a gentle steady breeze that keeps the area cool. Air circulation still requires motors and blades but they are cleverly embedded into these devices, pushing and even filtering air. New models have reached greater energy efficiency and are significantly lower in operating noise. With the inclusion of air purification capabilities, it’s a great offering that I had to take up. It’s made a world of difference to my daily comfort and the shortcomings of a bladed desk fan are behind me now. It might be a needless spend for some, but air technology at home is very important to me. Now I can grab a cold one without breaking a sweat.
