Chapter 2
What makes a Lionheart? (Part 1)
Walter’s eyes opened. He looked around to see a room he had never seen before. It was small in length but quite wide. A small wooden table was at his bedside with a bowl of water filled with blood stained rags and needles, a few empty bottles of rum and pharmaceuticals lay around it. Beyond that was a bookshelf with only three books on the country’s history, a bookend shaped like a balverins head and what appeared to be a journal with faded writing on it’s side where he could vaguely see the letters R. O and S. On top of it sat a lone vase of bright daisies. The room smelled of old wood and medicine. He tried to sit up but was far too weak from his wounds to move.
As he laid his head back down onto the soft feather pillow he heard a soft voice speak
“Well, hello there! It’s good to see you!”
Walter opened his eyes to see Lionheart approaching his bed with new bandages and a hot towel. As she reached for his wrapps he flinched and pulled away. But, Lionheart just smiled calmly. Her eyes were so gentle, but her face was scarred. Three marks fell from her top left brow down to her lower right jaw. Almost like a wound from an animal only larger.
“It’s alright, don’t be afraid. Your friend, Swift, is just down stairs. Cleaned up, stitched up and eating. Now let me do the same for you so you may join him, eh?” Lionheart said playfully
Walter hesitated, his shoulders lowered as he nodded. Lionheart began to unwrap his bandages when Walter asked “Who are you?”
Lionheart didn’t even glance up, she continued to clean up his wounds.
“My name I have not used in some time. The locals like to call me the Lionheart. They say it’s more ‘heroic and mature.’ So, that will do.”
Lionheart cleaned Walter’s wounds softly and wrapped him up.
“Would you like to eat now?” She asked. Walter was hesitant and quiet. Lionheart continued to smile calmly “I promise I will answer all of your questions while you eat.”
“There better be ale as well.” Walter grunted
“I have just the thing.” Lionheart grinned as she escorted Walter down the stairs.
