Chapter 2

What makes a Lionheart? (Part 3)

“Lucien is rebuilding an old kingdom weapon known as ‘The Spire’. A large tower with enough capacity to alter time itself. Originally it began so he could bring back his family, but now I believe he has merely gone mad with power.” Lionheart continued.

“How do you know all of this madam? And why did you help us? Just who the devil are you?” Swift asked, Walter sat at his chair gazing at Lionheart intensely.

“You have not yet seen it? Look at the ocean’s horizon and you will. I’ve seen it from the inside with my own eyes.” Lionheart said as she poured herself another glass of water.

“My sister and I were but small children, orphaned when our parents were killed in a bandit raid on their way to town. 2 years we struggled on the streets of Bowerstone Old Town when we heard a trader was selling random merchandise just around the corner from our tent. One such item was a music box, the seller claimed it was magic, that it would grant you any single wish your heart desired. My sister and I didn’t believe it at first. But a mysterious blind woman convinced us to look into it. The whole day we spent earning gold coins doing odd jobs; Exterminating giant beetles from a warehouse, retrieving lost property, whatever we could find. Finally, we earned enough to buy the music box. We took it back to our tent and my sister made our wish. She wished for us to live in a castle like the one we had such a clear view of from our small cold tent. The box disappeared. We were still poor. We wasted five gold pieces on a trinket that did nothing! Disappointed we decided to just go to sleep after the long difficult day. We were awoken in the middle of the night by Adventure barking something awful. When we checked to see what was the matter it was a group of guards to escort us to the castle.

It appeared our wish did come true! We would finally have a home! My sister and I were welcomed by an old butler by the name of Jeezes who lead us to Lord Lucien’s study. When entered Lucien asked us of the music box. We explained to him that it had vanished after we used it, he was just amazed to hear that we were able to make a wish upon it. He asked us to stand in this strange circle he had in the back of the room next to a large stainglass window we hesitated, but disobeying him was more frightening than anything to any lower class citizen let alone two small children. The circle began to glow blue at our touch, he exclaimed that we were heroes like in the old stories we used to read. But something… went wrong.” As she continued Walter and Swift could see so much pain and sorrow fill her eyes.

“Lucien tried to enter the circle. But the hue turned red and seemed to have burned his hand. He ran to his desk which was covered in old books, papers and strange pictures. Mumbling something of one of us being the wrong hero, one that would stand in his way. He shot her, my dear sister, Rose. He shot me too, sending me out the window and into the streets. I awoke a few days later two to familiar faces. I was saved by the blind woman, Theresa and my dog, Adventure. 10 years went by as I studied how to become strong enough to defeat my enemy. The year of my 17th Theresa told me of my true destiny, that I am the last Hero of Albion, the one who will stop Lucien and his plan. My name is Sparrow and that Swift is one of the reasons I saved you, so no more innocent lives like my sister’s must be sacrificed for Lucian’s ploy.”
