chapter 1
From where to there

The golden light of a rising sun trickled into a plain stonework room through a small window. Roosters crowed from several feet below. Bartemous rises from his simple feather mattress and walks to a small wooden table piled with scrolls and books. He picks up a jug from the table and drinks the remaining contents. Confused, he turns and looks at his jug of tea sitting beside his mattress. He couldn't remember what he was working on the previous night, but he was sure it wouldn't do well in his stomach. It wasn't long before he was proven right.
The old wizards midsection cramped up, and as he ran to the window bright colored foam began to seep out of his mouth and nose, clinging to his long black beard and hair. As soon as his head was outside, the rainbow colored foam was gushing out of him like a geyser. The foam seamed to stick to everything, coating it in some odd paint and leaving a random hue. The foam seamed unending, for several moments all Bartemous could do was retch and struggle for an occasional breath. Meanwhile he was spraying rainbow colored foam paint all over everything on the eastern side of his small tower.
When he was done retching, the wizards beard and robe were very colorful. He tried to wipe off the foam, only managing to smear it and blend colors together. He had entertained the notion of changing his beards color a few times in the past, but he had never dreamed of going to these extremes. The wizard carefully opened the wooden door to his room, attempting to avoid getting any of the foam on it.
The door opened to the middle of a narrow hallway. Across from that door was the doorway to his study, which was cluttered with glass bottles, books and odd random things like minerals and plant samples. The left end of the hall ended with spiral stairs, and the right ended with the door to his supply room. The Hall was a total of twenty feet long, with a smooth stone floor, and stone walls. Bartemous walked five feet down the hall toward his supply room and lost his footing. He quickly throws out his arms and wedges them on the wall, narrowly avoiding a fall. He tries to regain his footing and notices that the floor of the hall is extremely slick. When he does regain his balance he gives a deep sigh of frustration and with his hands firmly braced on the walls, he slowly makes is way to the door. After moving a few more feet down the hall his hands slip and he falls forward, smacking his face on the middle of the door.
The wizard grumbled as he picked himself up and opened the door. His supply room was filled with shelves and closets, each piled with various things. The closets sat on the opposite side from the door. Bartemous carefully checked the floor inside the room, to his relief it had nothing slick on it. He casually strolled to the closets and opened the first one on the right. This was his casual robes, the ones he would wear at his tower, while doing his experiments. They were very simple and easy to clean or replace, all gray made of basic cloth. As the door opened he discovered the closet was empty. He let out another deep sigh, and moved to the closet next to it. This one held his traveling robes, one for any occasion. He opened the closet and looked through them, remembering all his past adventures. One set of robes in particular stood out to him, it was his exploring robes. They were a mix of dark brown and dark grey, with a countless amount of small pockets all over, many of them hidden.
Baremous stood there looking at the robes in deep reflection for several moments. Everything seemed to be pointing to one thing, he needed an adventure. The wizard hadn't had a day like this in a long time. He felt like he was at the collage of wizardry, waking up with a dorm room trashed from multiple parties. He slipped into his exploring robes and began gathering supplies for a long journey. His mood took a complete turn for the better as he gathered supplies. He was even humming a pleasant tune as he grabbed a back pack loaded with his travel gear. Once he had all the needed supplies the wizard left the room. He was in such good spirits he slid across the slick section of the hall as graceful as an eagle catching a fish. As he entered his study a familiar voice came from the stairs.
The voice belonged to his assistant Henry, a young man with short brown hair and a thin mustache. "Master Bartemous, have you seen the mural on the tower wall?" Henry stepped out of the stairs and into the hall.
"Ahh Henry! You have impeccable timing, I'm preparing to travel. I've decided that it's far time for me to allow you the courtesy of attending my more arbituous endeavors. It's been shown to me that I am in serious need of an adventure." As Bartemous spoke he was gathering finger sized rolls of materials each wrapped with paper.
Henry walked to the doorway and slipped on the floor, falling right on his back, "why is this floor so slippery?" As he spoke he tried to get up and fell again
"Is it? I hardly noticed, when i went to gather necessities in the supply room." Bartemous sat the rolls on a table near the corner of the room, then picked up his staff from the corner. The staff was six feet long, a little taller than the wizard, made of wood with several brass and silver reinforcements running along the top half. Each reinforcement had gold or stone buttons spread along it. At the top of the staff the reinforcements extended and fanned out in a bowl shape with gaps, almost like a claw. He picked up a rough crystal and placed it in the fitting. Then he loaded the rolls of material in slots at the bottom of the reinforcements. " I believe that i spilled some newt slime on the floor last night. I was attempting to make solid bubbles. This is one of the reasons I have reached my decision to seek an adventure."
"But master you have parties at castle Boux and castle Ramfield, who will do tho- oof" Henry slipped and fell again.
"Come now Henry, you have assisted in a countless number of entertainments with me. Surely you can manage it on your own. You must have confidence in yourself if you intend to grow as a wizard." He was still loading materials in his staff as he spoke.
"But what if I'm not ready? What if i make a fool of myself? The quee- oof" Again Henry slipped and fell on his back. "Ooh i can't even seem to stand on my own, how will I accomplish anything other than mayhem without you?" Henry was just laying there, on the floor, abandoning any hope of standing.
Bartemous loaded the last roll of materials in his staff and began examining it, making sure everything on it was in proper order. "Henry do get up, you'll accomplish nothing, wallowing on the floor in self pity. I have the utmost confidence in your abilities and I am sure you will be a great success at the parties."
Henry rolled over and stood up, then headed towards the stairs in frustration. "I'm getting a mop and bucket, this mess needs to be cleaned up!"
"That's the spirit Henry! Keep you chin and your cheeks high, all will be well when you make them well." Bartemous followed him down the stairs, beaming with a positive attitude. "After you finish with the hall you can clean up the mess on the side of the tower."
Henry stopped and looked at Bartemous with an expression of utter surprise. "Why would you want me to do that? It's a beautiful mural of a very pretty lady."
This surprised Bartemous, but he was no stranger to surprises. As usual he kept his pleasant expression and simply said "well if you are really that fond of it you may leave it there."
"But master Bartemous, I still don't understand why you're leaving. More importantly I don't understand how you expect me to handle all this on my own."
"Ahh finally your senses are catching up with you," Bartemous said with a smile, then he put his hand on Henrys shoulder. "I'm leaving you in charge of the tower and all the workings here. As soon as you get things cleaned and organized you'll want to hire an assistant. You are the master of the tower now Henry. You've earned it, so cheer up and remember who you will become."
"Wait, the tower is MINE!?"
"I thought I was being rather clear on the matter. Until I return, you will be Master Henry. I do expect you to respect my work and continue on it. Also, please respect what I've taught you. It is far better to spread joy and well being, than fear and wrath. It may be important to protect the ones you love, but what is the use if no one is happy."
Henry was overwhelmed with a multitude of emotions. He stood there speechless for a moment, then a wave of happiness came over him and he lunged forward, wrapping his arms around Bartemous, tears streaming down his face. "I promise to remember everything you've taught me! I shall miss you until your return!"
"Henry do be careful, there are many volatile things in my pockets" Bartemous said with a chuckle, as he patted Henrys back. They stood there hugging like family for a few moments. Then they both pulled away, keeping their hands on the others shoulders, exchanging tear filled smiles. Then Bartemous made his way to the door, grabbing his traveling hat off the hat rack that stood beside the exit, placed it on his head, and stepped outside, closing the door with gentle care.
Once outside, he double checked his hat. It was a very tall dark gray thin leather hat with a wide brim it tapered slowly to a point that would flop over when he wore it. Bartemous adjusted the hat so the point was on the left side, and out of his way. Then double checked all his equipment, hat, staff, robes, shoes, he realized he had forgotten his sandals. The wizard let out a deep sigh and went back in to grab them. Fortunately for the wizard they sat just next to the door. With his rope sandals now on his feet he was ready for his journey. He walked briskly down the cobble stone path to the road, completely forgetting to shut the door to the tower.
