So while I have had a farm for about 3-4 years now, this will be the first year I am going to lay in a significant pile of chaffhaye. We use it for all of the animals, the goats adore it, so do the chickens. However the price, we don't adore at $18 a bag, it can get spendy, so we only use it for the goats, and then give the left overs to the chickens.
I looked in to getting a pallet delivered, but we would have to order 6 pallets!!! I haven't the storage for that, there are 40, 50 lb bags in each pallet. While the cost savings is considerable, it's just not in the cards.
I really like chaffhaye for a multitude of reasons, I see healthier animals, lots of rich goats milk, I worry less about wastage, since they eat every part of it. With normal alfalfa, they waste AT LEAST a third of what we feed them, even more if it is below 3rd cutting alf. Living here in the PNW, we don't get higher than 3rd cutting, usually, and with the wacky weather we have had this year, we will barely make a 3rd cutting in September.
If you have goats, or indeed any farm animal, I highly recommend chaffhaye. Super good quality, ok price, if you can get it delivered by the 6 pallet full. LOL!!!
