Farm Machinery - Old Combine. This one is home to a big Snake !

in farm •  8 years ago

Yes, it's true ! Here's an old "Combine". It is called a Combine because it COMBINES the Seeds and the Fertilizer together to go into the soil as it is towed behind a tractor. 138.JPG

This one is very old, maybe it was used 80 to 100 years ago. There are separate compartments for the seed and fertilizer. The forward motion of the tractor drives an augur type system within the machine which feeds the seed and fertilizer down some pipes to the soil where it gets applied in a set ratio. The farmer will adjust some openings inside the machine to set the ratio of seed and fertilizer to be sown.

You can see the top ( timber ) compartment here, which holds the fertilizer. Be careful when opening this to have a look , because a lot of the time, a 12 foot long, big fat Carpet Snake ( Python ) sleeps in here. He/she also takes up residence in the roof of our Farmhouse, where the rats and mice make a tasty meal. It is quite a shy Snake, and does not hang around for long once discovered. We love our big Python, it's part of the Family !!

Upvoted, and happy to help ! Thanks for your encouragement too.

I probably shouldn't admit this but I had no idea what a combine was before reading this post. I'd seen one before but had no idea what it did.

Thanks for the post NWO

P.S. I just chucked up an article about the Pasha Bulker incident that happened in Newcastle back in 2007. I thought you might find it interesting, not far north from Sydney. You can read it by clicking here.

All the best mate.

O)h great, glad i could help you out on that one, Harry.

Wou, I have learned something new again today, I like to learn about how machines are working inside :) Have a great day

Thanks for your interest !

Nice and old sacrifices everybody would love him in his twin

Not to split hairs but this is actually called a "drill" named after the feed auger in the seed box which meters out the seeds into the seed tubes, dropped behind furrows cut by sets of disks mounted along the bottom side. It's a deluxe model designed to also fertilize and plant in one pass.

A combine is a harvesting machine which combines the previously separate farm practices of scything (cutting), threshing (beating the grain until it separates from the chaff), and winnowing (blowing air through the threshed grain and chaff to separate the components by their differing weights).

I do see the confusion and the logic in your statement, but I'm a farmer and a history buff. Sorry if I burst your bubble.

No problem, and thanks for the information. However, we are from different Countries, and we call things different names. You might call it a Drill, we call it a Combine.

Very interesting! You have just gave me an idea.. Could I follow your example, going around the countryside taking pictures of old farming instruments in Esan? I have seen old wooden tools and farming equipment lying in corners of houses and being neglected.

Why not do that my friend. I'm sure everyone would enjoy it.
