Experiencing Hands on with Rice Farming in Thailand...Part 1

I have always wondered how rice was grown and cultivated been a city boy in Bangkok and only enjoying eating them tasty grains of rice just about with every meal i often wondered how does this tiny grain come to be so i wanted to see and know how rice was grown so my girlfriend in Thailand came from the Northeastern part of Thailand called Isan, Khon Kaen and she lived in a village about 50 km out of Khon Kaen were her parents have a huge rice plantation. So off we when on a bus trip to Khon Kaen which is about a 6 hour bus ride or you can fly which takes less then a hour but we decided to do the bus trip cause i was interested in seeing the country side and i am glad i did it's the only way to see how beautiful it really is green lush fields of rice as far as your eye could see i couldn't wait to get amongst them fields and get my hands and feet muddier.

Rice has always been the staple food of the Thai people, and it plays a crucial role as the essence of Thai life. Farmers transfer the knowledge of rice cultivation from one generation to the next and i was about to learn as much as i could about this fascinating tasty little rice grain.

The rice-planting season in Thailand usually starts in May. Around this time, showers signal the approaching end of the dry season, and farmers once more prepare for rice planting as one annual cycle ends and another begins.

The cycle all begins with the seedlings been planted in a specified area of the farm and left to sprout to a certain maturity before it's uprooted, transported manually and transplanted to other flied section on the farm.

When the seedlings have grown to a height of about 40 to 50cm they are ready to be uprooted and transported manually and transplanted at a greater distance one from the next this is were the back breaking work begins as you can see in this up coming video of me having a go i must say i needed a few shots of there rice whisky (lao khao) it's there local moonshine pain killer.

I Never Seen Rice Being Harvest Before, It Looks Like Hard Work ! Why Do You Hit The Grass With Your Leg After You Pull It Up From The Water ?

Definitely hard work would not want to be doing it as a living but was a experience to be part of seeing how it's done we hit the baby rice shoot on our leg to shake of the excess dirt or mud.
