Tried something new this year, and as they say...the proof is in the pudding. mmmmmmmm pudding.
I been feeding them a basket full of greens almost every day, i use the scythe or just rip the tops off with my hands, that way the greens grow back.
If you let the chickens out into the field they scratch the greens to death.
They also get a scoop or laying pellets and whole every morning, and oyster shell for calcium. The pic of the dirty eggs are from my 3-6 year old hens ( 1 1/2 days worth,IMO its probly best to butcher them after 2 years).
They slowed down at times, the older chickens did a molt or whatever was going on and i was only getting around 7 eggs a day out of 5 dozen chickens or so. but the 1 year olds layed eggs like crazy all winter.
They have to have certain nutrients to make the egg, theres not much grass or bugs for them to eat during winter, so you have to feed them. I never had to put a light in their coop either.
Just my thoughts and what worked for me, i'm no expert by far.
Impressive haul and beautiful carrots!
