Our First Time To Grow Chilies As Alternative Crop Because Of The Rising Tax On Rice

I am sharing with you some of the photos that I took few months ago. Here you will see the stages of growing chilies or what we call Siling Labuyo here in the Philippines.

We grow rice mostly but because of the ever increasing tax we decided to grow chilies for this previous growing season just an alternative and keep us occupied. Chilies are good alternative for farmers to consider given the issue I mentioned about tax. We also asked some of our farmer friends about their advice before we made a commitment to plant chilies. All of them agreed that chilies are good alternative. Here are some of the photos to document our first time to grow chilies:

We started with the seedlings that we bought from the supplier. Here you can see how much seedlings we had to buy.

Getting ready to transport the seedlings to the farm and have them planted by some farmers we hired to help with the task.

After a few weeks you can see here the farmers are taking care of the seedlings. They are manually checking each seedling to see if they are good or if something is infesting them. Weeds are also removed manually at this point.

This is the water source to keep the beds irrigated.

The chilies are already flowering here and soon they will bear fruit. This is a very crucial time for the flowers to survive and grow. The wind, the insects and the rain may cause these flowers to fall or rot so extra care is needed.

Ready for harvest. Look at the red chilies. I was excited to take this photo when I heard about the fruits.
