Spring Vegetables

Every human being should have a piece of land to cultivate and reconnect with Nature. A garden is a source of pleasure, a way to dissolve mental, physical and emotional tensions.

In addition, it can be a useful tool to develop food sovereignty in our own way, and as many places in the world are already doing, to face the transition to a new economic model.

But do we know where to start growing spring vegetables?

How to grow spring vegetables

The arrival of spring, despite the strange weather conditions, brings with it the constant increase in the hours of light and the renewed heat. As all nature awakens, the gardener or the simple enthusiast with the arrival of spring looks at his land or balcony with joy, ready to get his hands dirty.

Even if you do not have experience growers, start you do not need much: the good sterile soil, to prevent fungi or bacteria attack babies plants, containers and of course the seeds.

To plant the seeds, you can use everything, not only the black plastic containers found in specialized stores, but you can also recycle the egg packets or the jars of yogurt. The important thing is that they ensure good drainage, preventing the seedlings from rotting.

It is possible to recover good quality soil in the garden shops. For 'sterile' soil is not understood a dead soil but an organic compound capable of ensuring the food of plants, without the presence of harmful microorganisms, perhaps present in a compost that is not well done.

To avoid confusion and possible asphyxiation of newborn shoots, it is good to establish a planting scheme. For this, simply follow the instructions on the seed packages or the various guides available on the net.

However, not all seeds develop at the same time indicated by the guidelines, germination depends on many factors, such as the heat of the soil and the atmosphere, light or humidity. Do not give up if the results await you, be patient.

Be careful to keep your buds moist but do not drown them, place them in a warm area but not too much. If you have curious animals, place the jars away from any possible accident.

The importance of the method.

Growing spring vegetables is a bit like cooking, to do well, you must be methodical and take notes on how things are going. You can mark yourself when the first seeds sprout, how long it took for the first leaves to come out, etc., so that you have a good recipe for the next experiments.

When your creatures have grown enough, it will be time to 'wean' them, transplant them into larger pots or if you have the opportunity directly in your garden or orchard.

What are spring vegetables?

A small calendar of what can be sown between March and May is exactly what is right for us:

  • In March we can plant spinach, pumpkins, rockets, melons, zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers, turnips, peas, leeks, parsley, beans and carrots on open ground. In warm beds, instead, pepper, celery, cabbage and always tomatoes and courgettes.
  • In April, free form of sowing on the floor of chicory, watermelons, radicchio, valerian, leek, basil, thistles and peas, tomatoes and melons. In seedbeds, however, it is time for cabbage, celery and eggplants.
  • In May, finally, under the basil, the parsley, the lettuce, the carrots, the thistles and again the beans, the radicchio, the rocket, the melons, the valerian and the pumpkins. In seedbeds you can plant celery, cabbage and lettuce.

@berthal!, I love these vegetables for my meals, where can I get some. Thank you for teaching us the great nutrients in these vegetables displayed here today. I wished they are in my house today for my meals.

Here in Venezuela they are obtained in some supermarkets even and some with more luck cultivate them in their own lands.

Regards appreciated @bertha1.

I loved your publication. I have always thought that taking care of a garden is a therapy for the soul. My grandmother treated her plants as if they were girls, she even spoke to them.
Thanks for sharing.

I also wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to invite him to support @STEEMCHURCH in the 20K SP delegation sponsored by @theycallmedan.

Hola @bertha1
