Hello community

On this occasion, we wish to talk to you about a food that is consumed in the whole world, but that has an interesting history, besides that its sowing, cultivation and harvest has not changed much since remote times. I mean Rice.

Rice cultivation originates from the Asian continent between India and China. There is knowledge of rice crops since 7000 years ago and of their arrival in Thailand for 5000 years and later in other Asian countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan and Korea.


Since ancient times, rice has represented a very important crop in the cultural, food and economic aspects.
With the rice was listed as symbols of good luck, fertility and happiness, hence the custom that is spread by many countries to throw rice to newlyweds to wish happiness and good offspring to the couple.


The word rice in Chinese and Japanese is synonymous with food. It is a main food in Asian cuisines and is the staple food for more than half of the world's population.


It is the second crop after wheat in terms of area harvested worldwide. E believes that the species Oryza sativa L is the oldest and most cultivated, the genus Oryza has more than 24 species.


Rice grows in flooded, semi-flooded and shaded regions of South Asia, Africa, North and South America.

Historically, certain important facts can be cited

  • In 1970 they were unearthed from the Neolithic ruins in the Hemudu of Yuyao in the province of Zhejiang long grain seeds of non-glutinous rice.
  • There are bronze vessels dating from the Zhou Dynasty (c.1100 BC - 771 BC) that were used to store rice. It is believed that at this time rice was a worthy feast for aristocrats.
  • Between 770 BC - 476 BC rice begins to form part of the Chinese diet and intensive agricultural techniques are developed for its cultivation.
  • In Persia and Mesopotamia rice was known thanks to diplomatic relations between King Darius and the Dynasties of - China and India. In China the emperor Chen-Nung (year 2700 a.n.e) was responsible for planting the rice thus giving it a greater significance.
  • Between (221 BC - 206 BC), the period before the Qin Dynasty the rice became a food of special preparation from which wines were also prepared.

In ancient times in China, the lowlands of the Yangtze River region and northern China were prepared for rice planting, with most of the natives working the land in particular during the different seasons of the year.

The rice sowing cycle is divided throughout the year as follows:

  • The plowing is done in the spring.
  • The weeding in the summer.
  • The harvest in the autumn.
  • Silage or hoarding in the winter

Currently, rice is a widespread crop in many countries, and is part of many traditional and daily dishes in many cultures, for example in Bangladesh and Cambodia represents three quarters of the food of its citizens and the other side of the world in the Republic. The Dominican rice is part of the FLAG traditional plate of the islanders reaching to make one of the main crops of the island.


On the European continent, Spain is known worldwide for its traditional Paella and Italy for the Risotto, both dishes that rice has as its main ingredient.
Venezuelans also have rice inside our traditional dish Pavilion that accompanies black beans, shredded meat and male plantain.
In Cuba, one of its typical dishes is Moros y Cristianos, which consists of rice with black beans.
The typical Brazilian dish Feijoada is also accompanied by white rice.
Many are the Asian and oriental dishes popularized worldwide whose protagonist is rice in any of its varieties for example Sushi, fried rice, rice three delicacies commonly known as Chinese rice, as well as different soups and broths that are accompanied with noodles of rice.


Rice by its category is known as: short, medium, long grain rice and wild rice. Due to its characteristics of color, touch and aroma, it can be glutinous, aromatic and pigmented rice and its vaporized and precooked industrial treatment.
Rice is a cereal consumed in the whole world that due to its nutritional characteristics is of great value for a healthy and balanced diet. It is rich in starch and lysine. Brown rice contains B vitamins, and vitamin E; phosphorus and potassium.
