Hello friends of the farm today I am going to name you the most common diseases that pigs that are raised on farms can present, so pig diseases can be infectious, hereditary, infectious or contagious for any other reason which cause considerable economic losses such as consequence of death, failure in reproduction, loss of weight gain, among others. Diseases can also occur if the caregiver does not maintain the area of the animals with the necessary health care and, if the usual medical care to the animal is not maintained, which can be through vaccines, vitamins, among others. It is essential that the breeder knows in their first manifestations the determining features of each of them, in order to take the forecasts of the case thus preventing the progress of the evil, which in many cases becomes contagious, endangering the entire herd.
Pigs like any animal or living being is also exposed to many factors that attack their health, many of these diseases can be prevented through management practices, for which it is considered very important to know the most important and common available elements inside a pig farm, referring to each of the pathological complexes. Among the common diseases that affect the newborn piglet are those that are related to your digestive system in first stay.
BRONCHITIS:
This is an inflammation of the bronchi, caused by germs, worms or dust, also by excessive humidity, wet beds and dirty sheds and corrals, which occurs in pigs with persistent cough, mild fever, inappetence, nasal mucus and noisy breathing.
It is necessary to administer vermifuges, but, by expert people, as well as expectorating inhalations: new and hygienic repairs must be provided; to the piglets to feed them with milk.
CHOLERA OR SWINE FEVER:
Produced by a filterable virus, this disease is very contagious and the attacked animals must be put in the hands of veterinarians so that they can diagnose with safety and be able to proceed with their cure.
The only method to treat cholera is the application of specific serum in the animals attacked, and as a preventive method the serum-vaccination of the pigs.
This disease is known because the animals lose their appetite, they have fever and fits of cough, the skin acquires a red pigmentation, the muscles become rigid, the eyes give off a purulent discharge and the animals acquire a constipation followed by diarrhea.
If not attacked quickly, pigs usually die in a few days.
POISONING:
When you encounter cases of poisoning, which may be due to the ingestion of arsenic, lead, common salt, bleach, food in very bad conditions, etc.
They are recognized because animals show common symptoms of violent belly pains with a rapid death or slow disease with diarrhea, to fight which they must change immediately the feeding and administer a purge of magnesia salts in proportion of one spoonful per 45 kilos of live weight, providing the corresponding antidote when it was discovered what kind of poison is ingested by the pig.
HEMORRHOIDS:
When a bleeding red membrane called retroverted rectal mucosa appears in the anus, it is a sign of this disease, which causes a constipation or inflammation of the rectum, which is remedied by administering laxative foods and sprinkling that affected part with alum and calcium, when there is no need to practice a surgical operation because the disease is very advanced.
INDIGESTION:
Indigestion comes from inadequate nutrition and is manifested by loss of appetite, little fever, constipation and collapse of the flanks. In these cases, change the diet, liquefying it for a few days and supplying the animals with a spoonful of laxative salts for every 50 kilos of their weight, dissolved in the soup.
WORMS:
The worms in the intestines commonly called Ascaris suis, are recognized because the animal loses meat, the skin is dry, suffers a general weakness, has a fever, does not develop and has fallen ears.
Then you have to keep the animal attacked by worms fasting for half a day and then administer an anthelmintic based on oil of quenopodium.
PARALYSIS:
Although the causes of paralysis are not exactly known, this loss of control over the muscles can be attributed to vitamin deficiency, that is, lack of certain vitamins in the diet.
The males take a staggering gait and the disease is gradual, while the females feel the attack of blow and their hind limbs remain without movement.
There are no treatments for these cases, so it is advisable to slaughter the animals quickly.
Assuming that the causes come from feeding, you do not have to feed the growing animals entirely with corn.
PNEUMONIA:
This disease is manifested in animals by breathing difficulties, coughing fits, nasal discharge, fever, general weakness, and poor appetite. Its most common causes are to lie down in cold, damp places, as well as changes from heat to cold; also by infectious germs.
It is necessary to take care that in their sheds and corrals there is no humidity or drafts, that they have dry beds, and if they are affected; rub your ribs with turpentine.
RHEUMATISM:
Wet pens or sleeping on cold cement floors also cause swine and rheumatic muscle conditions in pigs that make them unable to walk; Sometimes they have a fever, swollen joints and muscle aches.
They are treated with a daily dose of 0-90 grams of sodium salicylate for every 45 kilos of weight, but we must pay attention to their pens; Cover the cement floors with dry woods or straw, do not agglomerate animals, leaving them in dry places and with plenty of space.
SCABIES:
Scabies is caused by mites that live on the skin and also forming subcutaneous galleries.
It produces itching pigs that forces them to scratch against hard places, crusting skin, mainly in the armpits, on the back and behind the ears.
The animals should be given antiselaric baths with prepared products of recognized effectiveness, scrubbing with a brush or burlap the affected parts.
TUBERCULOSIS:
This disease produced by the Bacillus of Koch is easily contagious between cattle and pigs or among the latter; the symptoms are pneumonia and gradual loss of flesh; the internal organs are injured.
The medicinal treatments are not yet completely effective; tuberculinize the pigs and proceed to feed only with pasteurized dairy by-products and come from dairy farms where there are no tuberculous cows.
There are another series of diseases that can attack pigs that the animal may also present. These diseases are of the locomotor system; Some of them may be lameness which is caused by not getting to bind or seal the navel, lesions on the legs, biting of its tail or castrations that become infected. The syndrome of leg abduction is also considered a congenital disease in the animal.
The congenital diseases can be of genetic origin, either of races such as landrace and pietrain; by sex, deficiency in the hill in the process of gestation, piglets that are born premature, among others. Diseases in pigs can vary depending on their breed, care, feeding or environment in which the animals are surrounded.
