The male pheasant measures between 60 and 89 cm and its estimated weight is approximately 1.3 kg. Its bright plumage can be yellow, blue, red, brown and green, while the female is between 50 and 63 cm with an estimated weight of 0.9 kg and its plumage is brown. They are very easy to differentiate and normally in the month of September the pheasants during the first two months of life their feathers are changed.

The pheasant is a game bird with a wide distribution around the world. Live in fields where there are ponds, lakes and forests. In general, they build nests in rural areas or wooded areas and sleep on the trees that are already protected there. The pheasants run and walk freely, they can fly but in short distances (speed from 40 to 60 km / h). When they are in danger, they move much faster and they make calls (kok kok or ker-erk) to alert the pack.

Pheasants breed in the months of March and April. The males mate with several females of their species, that is to say that they have between 5 and 9 females. Each female lays between 12 and 14 eggs, then goes through an incubation period of 23 to 25 days. The baby pheasants are born in the month of May or June, stay with the mother for several days and quickly learn to fly and walk in the trees.

Poor feeding of these birds can cause death or developmental problems. They feed on insects, worms, snails, seeds, fruits, leaves, snakes, crickets, grasshoppers, caterpillars, lizards and sometimes small birds. To form an adult pheasant (6 months) you need foods that contain proteins. If you want the bird to grow fat, you can supply it with a combination of soy pellets, wheat, corn, sorghum and fishmeal or meat as a protein base.

The pheasant is a very aggressive animal and if you want to raise these birds take into account the following:

  • The soil must have good drainage.

  • They should always have food and fresh water.

  • They must be in an adequate environment and space.

  • Avoid excessive temperatures. Good ventilation and lighting favors bird feathers, achieves a state of tranquility and reduces nerves.

  • It is advisable to cut the beaks of the birds so that they do not get hurt. This does not cause pain to the bird and can be done monthly.

  • The wounded or sick animals should be separated from the rest of the group.

  • In very hot weather it is advisable to place a sprinkler irrigation.

  • In the sheds where pheasants are found, other animals should not be introduced.
