Mint is a plant that has attracted the attention of man for centuries. It is a type of aromatic plant that is characterized by medicinal properties as are its antiseptic and espectorales properties which makes us consume mint in those moments that we suffer from sore throat or discomfort in the chest.
Among the most common species we have:
The mint piperita (Mentha piperita) and the mint spicata (Mierha spicata). They are easy to find and they resist the adversities of the climate, the months of May and June are a good option to cultivate this plant.
This plant in the home is used as a repellent against ants, aphids and other common pests of plants, in addition to being usual in beauty as an ingredient to tone the skin.
This plant requires a place without much sun exposure. Although the mint can be in the sun, the ideal is to cultivate in the shade or in what we call semi-shade. That is, it is not directly exposed to the sun. On the other hand, like many crops, mint needs a moist place.
BASIC CARE:
It is a plant that gives several harvests a year -between two and three-, so it has a great performance for the little attention it requires.
In spite of its great virtues, it is an invasive species and one must take great care and control.
Mint is a type of horizontal development plant. When you want to plant it, it requires a wide place, it multiplies at great speed. It is recommended that the place or flowerpot be about 20 centimeters deep so that it can grow without any problem. Unlike other crops, mint is recommended to grow it alone.
Among the possible pests or diseases that you can find when growing mint we highlight the Rust, a type of disease that causes the plants to turn yellow on the stems, and the Phyllosticta menthae, a fungus that causes brown spots throughout the plant.
Type of soil
The paradise for mint is a fertile soil, with many nutrients (humus) and humid. A good substrate and a lot of space will make it grow at a rate that will surprise you.
Although they adapt relatively well to most soils, they can not stand those that prevent them from growing: limestone lands, unbalanced in terms of nutrients and, worst of all: very dry and with many stones. The roots can not be extended at will in a terrain with these characteristics.
There are three methods:
Seeds: the process is slower, but it is recommended for the first plantation.
Division of the bushes: For the months of April, September-October, the old bushes are cut into pieces and planted again and we water abundantly.
Rhizomes: are some underground stems that the plant uses to reproduce, those that have more roots are the most recommended.
USES OF MINT:
It is a great repellent against ants and aphids.
It can be collected from 3-5 months of its cultivation.
It can be used to soften headaches, stomach pains, vomiting and digestive problems.
Peppermint leaves, chewed, kill bacteria that produce bad odor and freshen breath.
The menthol that contains helps the respiratory system. It can be rubbed on the chest.
It is also used to make tea, pennyroyal, for its vitamin properties, to soothe muscular pains and massage.
