The village was founded in 1990 by a group of 15 women , they are survivors of rape by local British soldiers. Umoja’s population has now expanded to include any women escaping child marriage, FGM (female genital mutilation), domestic violence and rape – all of which are cultural norms among the Samburu.
As explained by a resident she said and I quote "I have learned to do things by myself, here that women are normally forbidden to do,” says Nagusi, a middle-aged woman with five children.
“I am allowed to make my own gains in revenue and when a tourist buys some of my beads and goods I am so proud.”
The unique features of the Umoja community is that some of the more experienced women's train and educate younger girls in the villages on issues such as early marriage and FGM.
From my perspective, this will greatly reduce poppulation in that area if they keep expanding.
Non governmental organisation needs to visit this community and clariify their thought, reorientation both male an female..
Most importantly improve their standard of living.
