Fashion Revolution Week // Get Involved & Sign the Manifesto

in fashion •  7 years ago  (edited)

Have you ever stopped to wonder, Who made my clothes? If not, now is a good time to start considering. In case you didn't know, this week (April 23-29) is Fashion Revolution Week, and it's bigger than ever. There are a ton of events going on worldwide, and although there are none on the schedule in my town, there could be some in yours. With today being the 5th anniversary of the Rana Plaza collapse which killed over 1,000 garment factory workers, there's no better time to think about how you can do your part.

HOW ~ Y O U ~ CAN GET INVOLVED:

1. WRITE A LETTER TO A BRAND
The email tool on fashionrevolution.org makes it super easy to send a letter to top brands asking more information about the supply chain and the important question of, who made my clothes? A portion of the sample letter you can send along states, "It is very important to me that people working in your supply chain are seen, heard, paid properly, and working in safe conditions." It only takes a couple minutes to send off a letter.

2. SIGN THE MANIFESTO

"We are Fashion Revolution. We are designers, producers, makers, workers and consumers. We are academics, writers, business leaders, brands, retailers, trade unions and policymakers. We are the industry and the public. We are world citizens. We are a movement and a community. We are you.

We love fashion. But we don’t want our clothes to exploit people or destroy our planet. We demand radical, revolutionary change.
This is our dream…"

Sign the manifesto here There are only currently a little under 2,000 signatures.

3. SEND A POSTCARD TO A POLICY MAKER
Ask whether or not your local officials are doing anything to make sure the fashion industry is safe & fair for everyone involved. The link will take you to a printable template you can use.

4. CREATE A LOVE STORY
This challenge invites you to take a stand against disposable fashion by taking it slow, buying less and cherishing the pieces you own. Share the love story you've created with a garment through photo, video or text and there's a chance it could be featured on the Fashion Revolution blog.

5. TRY A HAULTERNATIVE
Okay, so I'll admit I was thrown off by this term at first...but it simply means refreshing your wardrobe without buying new clothing. Makes sense! There are several ways to go about this including purchasing secondhand clothing.
