Maison Margiela’s Pre-Fall 2018 menswear and womenswear collections calls upon the brand’s artisanal reconstruction and reinvention approach to fashion.
French luxury fashion house Maison Margiela has returned with a pair of Pre-Fall 2018 collections for its menswear and MM6 womenswear line. On display is the incorporation of new patterns and fits that mesh well with the iconic elements that have made Margiela so famous over the years.
The uncompromising approach to Maison Margiela iconoclastic heritage continues under the label’s 2014 appointed creative director John Galliano, with his poetic vision of Haute Couture marrying conceptualism with artistry and elegance.
Founded in 1988 by Martin Margiela, these Pre-Autumn collections continue to embody the anonymity and craftsmanship of the avant-garde Belgian designer himself. The reinvention of found garments, destructed then reconstructed, has been at the heart of the label’s influential run in fashion. Margiela himself once transformed a leather butcher’s apron into a dress, after all.
Featuring fresh pieces alongside reworked looks of classic staples, these new collections are no different, taking their signature artisanal approach to deconstructing, redefining and reinventing both menswear and womenswear. A respect for aged clothing and the emotional sentiments that come along with it continue to play out in the psyche of the brand.
A sophisticated blend of conceptualism and luxury, highlights from the menswear drop include a paint-splattered rework of the label’s signature Replica silhouette and a graffiti print tee scribbled over the brand’s logo and a “Stereotype” hoodie.
On the women’s side, the MM6 Maison Margiela offering lends inspiration from men’s fashion, reinterpreting archival pieces for the modern day. MM6 takes an unconventional approach to feminine casualwear, incorporating contemporary cuts and prints for a dramatic street-inspired take fused with Margiela’s classic sense of intellectual luxury.
While it’s hard to miss the shiny silver clutch bag that is in reference to the 70s disco scene, the cleverly branded nude bodysuit and reworked staples offer simpler looks that exude elegance and timelessness.
Both of the Maison Margiela collections are available now at HBX.
