First world problems | Day 1: Favorite* Decade | This and That Challenge

1970s

This was an extremely tough choice to make. I didn’t experience or live during the decade of the ‘70s. However, as per the original challenge theme rules, you didn’t have to. And for clarification I’m mainly referring to the American and maybe even more specifically NY metropolitan area’s Seventies.

Historically there are some other time periods that I would have rather lived during or experienced. But I chose the seventies since it was the closest and most “realistic” decade that fit the bill for me.

There aren’t a lot of things about this decade that I particularly care about — not that I don’t feel anything significant happened during these years. There were a lot of interesting and monumental things going on like (in no particular order) bell bottoms, hippies, disco music, war, revolution, the Stones, etc. — things of, and of-not, that nature.

Again in no particular order, there was the end of the Vietnam war, the oil crisis, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus (which is not listed on Wikipedia’s page for the 1970s!), the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Iranian revolution, the beginning of the Soviet War in Afghanistan...etc.

However those are all unrelated to my choosing this decade. The reason I picked it was simply because of all the stories I’ve heard from (mainly) my father, but also from others’, experiences in that decade.

Stories that brought images of wise guys and weirdly balanced mayhem, of times that probably inspired the type of action movies that were abundant in the decades to come.

Stories that could have been made into movies of their own. Urban cowboys — vigilantes even, from a faraway land.

Through the stories, it seemed to me to be a time just before technology started making huge advancements. Still keeping things simple. Making the world a much larger place than modern technology has made it today. Call us spoiled but it seems like nowadays you can travel to almost anywhere in the world and it’s just a matter of saving a few extra bucks. Even if it’s only for a few days and on a modest budget. If you really want to just fly somewhere to visit you can. This isn’t even taking into account the ease of communication that modern technology allows. Video chatting with your friend or relative on the other side of the globe - essentially for free. I actually remember using rotary telephones, the busy signal, no caller ID and using 25 cent quarters to pay for a call on a public phone.

This is a good seg-way into at least one of the next themes of the challenge! Hope you enjoyed! Stay tuned for some more of “this and that” from @hrissm!

I wasn’t around in the seventies but the moon was... so here’s a GIFed photo I took of the moon. Which essentially means I’ve travelled (backwards) through time.

I nominate @rickie @anna89 @ewuoso to take part in @tkappa’s:

LMAO@ Bonus: If you’re American, anti-British-English or bored: add the tag: #favoritetnt

Thanks for the challenge!

Lolz...A very unique challenge, I must admit @hrissm. It would have to be a future challenge for me though. I'd take time to go through the modalities again, and from @tkappa original rules too, when I'm done with my current challenge. Thanks for the nomination.

You’re welcome. Yeah it’s a cool challenge... Take your time! You control your own destiny!

thank you for the nomination

Yw! Looking forward to it if you wanna take part!

rotary phones were great. i still remember my bff's phone number: 6046, in 1997. imagine having a four-digit phone number now...

Wow. I never experienced a four digit number always seven and then we were required to use the three digit area code plus 1 at the beginning. I still remember my home phone number, my grandmother’s, some of my friends’ home phones too.
