7-Day Favourite "This and That" Challenge: Day 7 -Μy Favourite Monument

Last day of this challenge.. really i enjoyed it very much.

I share with you my favourite monume. My favourite monume is Parthenon.

Parthenon is a temple, built in honor of Goddess Athena, protector of Athens.

The Parthenon is an “ark of culture”, our ancient legacy, our “window” to our past.

The Parthenon is the biggest and more formal structure in Acropolis. Construction begun in 447 B.C. under the supervision of Ictinus and Kallikratis, two of the most famous architectures of their time. The temple was finished in 438 B.C. while the sculptural decorations were finished at the second half of 433 B.C. The temple is of Doric order with eight marble columns on the short sides and seventeen columns on the long sides.

According to mythology, that was the place that the Goddess of Wisdom, Athena and the God of the Sea, Poseidon, had a quarrel for the dominance over the city. Poseidon hit his Trident on the rocky hill and sea water started to gush. Athena on the other hand, hit her Spear and an olive tree grew. The other Gods that were the judges in this quarrel gave the victory to Athena. The Athenians, in order to “compromise” the two Gods, devoted a temple to each one, under the same roof. This is how one of the most “peculiar” , from an architectural point of view, structures on Acropolis was built (Erechtheion).
Mythology has it as a residence of the legendary King Erechtheas, who was later associated with God Poseidon.
