Moses and the fear of God: He threw the stone tablets to the ground, smashing them at the foot of the mountain. Exodus 32:19

The Book of Exodus describes of a dramatic event in the life of Moses, the moment in which the prophet broke the tables of the law when he saw the Golden calf among the Israelites. This fact that occurred during the trip to Canaan had a deep spiritual meaning, because God chooses and relates to men by the fear of God. The fear of God is that spiritual gift, that perfection from above, by which God recognizes men as his children; God had called Israel to be a holy people, and these people had to respond with fear to the Lord. This spiritual gift is defined as constancy, firmness, and devotion.
What use are the burnt offerings and the sacrifices if there is no fear of the Lord? Abel's offering in the Book of Genesis pleased the Lord because the offering was linked to that fear; but the offering of Cain was not united to the fear of God, and God rejected it. Israel, when building the calf to worship it, had chosen the path of Cain, the path of foolishness. That's why a prophet with wisdom taught: "For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burn offerings" Hosea 6:6.
In God, due to his spiritual perfection, there are no passions such as hatred, guilt, or shame, but God through Moses taught that he, as a supreme being, abominates idolatry. When Moses saw the idol built by the Israelites, he broke the tables because the pact with God was compromised or broken.
With these words, the Book of Exodus relates the fact:
"When they came near the camp, Moses saw the calf and the dancing, and he burned with anger. He threw the stone tablets to the ground, smashing them at the foot of the mountain" Exodus 32:19.
All this event leaves to men a great moral teaching, the accomplishment of the Decalogue is not enough to be blessed, as Jesus also taught the rich young man when this young man asked the teacher for eternal life; God, first of all, demands men to worship him with devotion.
