On the night of 18 to 19 January, the Orthodox celebrate the Feast of Epiphany (Holy Epiphany).

According to Christian religion, it was on this day that John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River.

By the Holy Scripture at that moment a white dove flew from the sky. This bird became a living embodiment of the Holy Spirit. Then to the people who were in the Jordan, the words of God came from heaven, in which He called Jesus his beloved son and sent him favor. It was from this time that Christ's earthly mission began, which culminated his Resurrection.

Sanctifying the water, the priest lowers the cross into a special Epiphany ice-hole, called "Jordan", the consecrated water is called "the great agiosm," that is, the great shrine.

It is believed that the baptismal water has the same miraculous power as the waters of the Jordan, which touched Jesus Christ.

Consecrated water is keeping for a whole year: it does not lose its properties. Believers use it to cure diseases, as well as to maintain the spirit and cleanse the home. To drink Epiphany water should be on an empty stomach immediately after awakening.
