Have the Noisy Mynas got rid of the pigeons?

Pigeons could only be described as opportunists, street wise and survivors. They scavenge for food throughout the world in every city, town and park. These birds just know people will throw them bits of food. And if one really takes notice there are pigeons of all colours and sizes. This is what I see, but then I like pigeons.

But not last Sunday in Peregian Beach on the Sunshine Coast. It was one of those really pleasant #sublimesundays, out with the locals and tourists eating brunch at a restaurant called Periwinkle enjoying the atmosphere, food and coffee.

When much to my surprise there were no pigeons walking around pecking the ground, instead Noisy Mynas were present honing in on any food lying on the ground. This is a new one and the worse thought filled my mind, "Are the Noisy Mynas overtaking the pigeons, getting rid of them ? I felt dismayed, I really hope not.





Unlike Indian Mynas that are native to Asia and India, Noisy Mynas are all Australian. Both of these birds belong to the Starling family. and both have very similar behaviours. The Noisy Mynas live along the eastern coast from Queensland to Tasmania and also in the State of South Australia. They are aggressive birds that effectively work together in a group against other birds, they kill the eggs and baby birds etc. Noisy Myna mate all year with males banding together in communities with a couple of female. Such clever resilient birds!

Generally Australians have a dislike for Noisy Mynas and a stronger dislike of Indian Mynas.

The Indian Myna bird has different colouring to the Noisy Myna.



In my want to be fair to these birds, there is at least one positive factor for both the Noisy Mynas and Indian Mynas, the singing and calls they make. But, more than anything else I really wish they would co-habitat peacefully with other birds.
