Tips for giving and receiving feedback

in feedback •  7 years ago

Hello,
I have always been very interested in developing my personal and professional skills and over the years I have found out that feedback is one of the most effective ways to quickly evolve myself.
Another thing that I love about feedback is that is a catalyst to build stronger and sincere relationship.

So long story short... give it a try!

If you are thinking "I struggle with feedback, I don't know where to start"... keep reading this email. You will find some guidelines, tips and also a framework that can help you to frame feedback. And remember as Martin Fowler says frequency reduces difficulty : "If it hurts do it more often"! He is talking about integration but it applies to feedback as well.

Giving effective feedback should:

  • strengthen confidence or improve the effectiveness of the recipient
  • focus on behaviour
  • be specific (time, observed behaviour, reaction)

Tips for Giving Feedback

  • make it a conversation
  • give feedback earlier
  • earlier feedback doesn't mean immediate
  • give feedback in private
  • ask if you can give feedback
  • don't expect the recipient to take action
  • remember that everyone "feedback cup" is a different size

Tips for Receiving feedback

  • ask for feedback
  • don't defend
  • seek clarification
  • say thanks
  • take action
  • feedback is a gift, you can decide whether to receive it or not, and whether to action it or not
  • if you want specific feedback, five constraints
  • think about who can help you to work on your feedback (allies)

Make it part of your "work" routine
What about having a feedback Friday?
Every Friday or every other Friday, take some time to give and receive feedback to/from one person: could be a colleague or a client.
I tried it before and it was very fun and effective.

Let me know if you give this a try and, of course, let me know if you have any feedback :)
