Globally, around 130 million women and girls are living with the effects from FGM and around 3 million undergo the procedure annually, according to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Almost all known cases of female genital mutilation carried out in the UK are legal piercings, official figures show. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is illegal in the UK and is a significant problem with over 137,000 women and girls living with consequences of FGM in the UK, while over 60,000 girls under 15 remain at risk of FGM.
Girls and young women at risk of FGM are a vulnerable group. The infections are often painful and may be accompanied by a noxious discharge spreading to the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries - and frequently become chronic. The procedure involves the removal of much of their external genitalia and are then sewn up. Yet it is rooted in a culture that deeply ties a woman’s worth to marriage and the appearance of her genitalia. The program also assists girls who interrupt their education because of pregnancy. Gatto’s former employer, Representative Brad Sherman, who has also introduced a similar bill in the U.S. I say “No” because scientific investigation has shown that people who were spanked as children bear emotional scars that harm their interpersonal relationships for life. Some Member States have seen an increase in this form of gender-based violence due to migration of people from countries where FGM is practiced. EIGE’s study focused on the estimation of the number of women and girls at risk of FGM in selected EU Member States. Over the decades she has met incredible opposition from the Samburu men, but against the odds she has established a haven currently housing 58 women and recently ran for a political position in her community.
FGM is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. In ancient Egypt, girls were not permitted to marry, enter a mosque or inherit property until they were circumcised. My book ''A lost Youth'' explores some of the struggle within families as young girls struggle to survive after going through this barbaric procedure. She talks about how the initiator tickled her clitoris to engorge it before slicing it off with a small knife, the same blade that was used on other girls. Removal of the clitoris and part or all of the labia minora (the inner vaginal lips). I don't see how you will beg for someone not to mutilate your clitoris or stitch up your vagina or your daughters even your worst enemy's! A Gambian friend recently told me that what we will see is an end to the open celebrations (similar to what is happening now in Kenya), but the operations will continue.
HOW DOES PLAN INTERNATIONAL WORK TO END FGM? Thus, since 2003, the United Nations introduced The International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation as an annual awareness day, that is celebrated globally every 6th February as part of the UN’s efforts to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation. SLAWW took part in the March 8, 1998 International Women's Day celebration and handed out material on the adverse effects of traditional practices. Malta has ratified several international conventions condemning FGM/C, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). According to the World Health Organization, some 98 percent of Somali women undergo the extreme procedure of circumcision.
NoFGM. My call is both for the UK and the world at large. There are many Muslim countries in which the mutilation is esentially unknown, including Algeria, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. What is it about these "researchers" and their obsession with male genital mutilation? Just two weeks ago, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deported an Ethiopian man in Georgia to his home country - after he served 10 years behind bars - for the 2006 genital mutilation of his then 2-year-old daughter. Diallo says, in her mind, there is no question. Religious leaders take varying positions with regard to FGM: some promote it, some consider it irrelevant to religion, and others contribute to its elimination. If men are on board, it can be solved. The proposed qualitative systematic reviews will, therefore, yield essential insights for future research and intervention development in this area.
