THE BECHDEL CON(TEST): does your favorite film pass? 3SBD on the line!

in feminism •  7 years ago  (edited)

Calling all film buffs and feminists! I have a contest for you that will pay 1SBD to the 3 top entries. (Or more! If this post goes viral I’ll share the love.)

The Bechdel Test examines whether women in films are portrayed as three-dimensional human beings with a range of lived experience and interests that do not revolve around men. The primary criteria for a film to pass the test are:

(1) it has to have at least two women in it

(2) who talk to each other

(3) about something besides a man.

The test was popularized by Alison Bechdel's comic Dykes to Watch Out For, in a 1985 strip called The Rule. For a nice video introduction to the subject please check out The Bechdel Test for Women in Movies on feministfrequency.com.

If you want to know more, check out www.bechdeltest.com and see what they have to say!

Now the rules of the contest!

Write a post about your favorite film that passes The Bechdel Test. Your post should:

  1. Feature a high-quality film that you actually love. This is subjective, but please don’t randomly select a movie. Choose something with merit and quality.
  2. Feature a film that has at least one strong, female lead!
  3. Tell us why you love this film!
  4. Tell us why you believe this film passes The Bechdel Test.
  5. Show us a glimpse of the movie, either through images or video.
  6. Feature the tag #bechdelcontest (doesn’t have to be primary tag!)

Once it’s done, please submit your post by leaving the link here in the comments! This is the only way I will accept submissions. :) Cutoff for submissions is Thur, Feb 22.

The top 3 authors will each receive 1SBD (or more, depending on the success of this post!) and be featured in a “contest roundup” post on my page next Friday.

I will also comment and upvote on every qualifying submission. Good luck, I can’t wait to watch some new movies!

Hi friend! Thanks for stopping by, I’m really glad you’re here!

I’m an artist, writer, and creative consultant based in the Pacific Northwest. I see steemit as an incredible asset to artists and creatives as a way to share their work and connect with like-minded people. You can check out my intro post, read more about the theatre projects I work on, or follow me! I’m especially interested in finding other performing artists on this site. If that’s you, please say hello! See you around the steemosphere! @lilyraabe

This is an awesome idea for a contest! I may just have to participate :) I'd have to think on what movie I would talk about. As a single parent with a daughter, I'm all about strong female roles in film, so this will be interesting to visit and get suggestions for other exceptional films! Great idea and post @lilyraabe

Thank you! I’m excited to see who submits (I totally hope you do!). I love that you’re raising a strong young woman over there--she’s lucky to have a Dad who makes sure she sees strong women represented!

Alright, my entry is complete! My choice? Mary Poppins ;)

Yessss. I love that choice, unexpected and also awesome. :) Can’t wait to go read it.

Thank you for submitting, looking forward to going and reading this! :)

love this, great idea!! i'm going to start thinking about whether I can even come up with a movie like this! pathetic that something doesn't come immediately to mind.

Yay! Thank you for stopping by and checking it out. Would love to have you submit something! Looking forward to seeing what you think of. :)

Oh, I’m so happy you submitted something. I cannot wait to go see what you have in store for me. :)

Love this contest! I'm going to think long about this and figure out which of my favorite movies I should write about.

Thank you for checking it out and I can’t wait to see what you submit! <3

Awesome, thank you @amrauthor <3

Awesome submission, thank you for entering! <3

I have taken the challenge and posted about a film that passes EASILY, Drew Barrymore's Whip It. https://steemit.com/feminism/@didic/bechdel-wallace-test-contest-whip-it

Ah! I’m so excited that you participated, I’m heading over there now to check it out! Thank you so much for adding to the challenge. :)

Awesome post--love the fantasy/sci-fi genre as a place to introduce strong female characters in roles that defy our expectations (and conditioning!). Thanks for sharing. :)

Wishing this was submitted on steemit since I wanted to comment and vote!!

This is on steemit.

it is? ok I guess I'm confused because it opens in busy.org and I have to have an acct to participate there.

Ok I see that it is a different interface that also uses steem, but isn't the same thing.

I like to compose there because it's easier, but I didn't realize it made it difficult to open my posts. Were you able to open it?

I wasn't able to open your post. I would have to create an account on busy.org to do so which someday I may do.

Ok actually I take that back. In the comments here you linked your post. I wasn't able to open that one. BUT when I just went to your blog, I can open everything there while on steemit!! very interesting....

Hi. I'm posting an entry to your contest. https://steemit.com/bechdelcontest/@agmoore/snowpiercer-a-rave-review I'm new here, so perhaps am not observing conventions properly. I'm trying, and appreciate the opportunity this contest offers. Whether or not I win, I hope you like the review.

Awesome, thank you so much for submitting your post! :) I just went and checked it out, nice one!!!

A bit last-minute, but I did look through my movie diary and just wanted to share this one: https://steemit.com/contest/@soyrosa/bechdel-test-contest-brimstone :-) Enjoy!

Left a longer comment on the blog, but this is a beautiful post and I am SO HONORED you chose to write up a contest blog this time around!! <3

Awesome, thank you so much for posting something and welcome to steemit too (looks like you’re newer here?!). :)

Hello there @lilyraabe,

Thank you for this contest, it was especially fun and a definite learning experience. I think I am more of a feminist than I initially thought.

Her is my Official Entry

https://steemit.com/bechdelcontest/@eaglespirit/official-entry-the-bechdel-contest-with-lilyraabe-the-joy-luck-club

Blessings. Eagle. xx

PS. We are both in the group #teamgirlpowa

Yay! Awesome, thank you so much for writing this, I can’t wait to go over there and read it. See you around. <3 #teamgirlpowa

You are very welcome, it was fun! xx

I'll definitely be taking part in this! =) ... And I have JUST the movie in mind ^^

Awesome! I can’t wait to see what you write. Thanks for participating. <3

Ok. Going to do it. But been sitting here for 5 minutes and still can't come up with a film!! All the films coming to mind have strong women who are strong directly because a man had done them wrong! This is a good challenge.

I’m glad you’re having fun thinking of something to feature! Can’t wait to see what you decide on--rather sad, isn’t it, that it can be such an exercise to think of a movie like this?!

Yay! This is a superb contest! I love all things entertainment and especially movies, and more so movies that portray girlpower! I've never talked about movies on Steemit or my own website but this is a great opportunity. I think I already have a movie in mind. This will be fun! :) Resteeming!

YAY. I’m so glad you’re excited, because I’m excited about it! Yesterday was Valentines and there’s so much focus on romance that I wanted to refresh, reset, and focus on some boss ladies. :) Can’t wait to see what you submit.

Hey! Great contest. Not sure if I even have time to think about it. But, if I get some time, I will. Nicely done @lilyraabe! Next time, use contest as your primary category and consider adding giveaway, and or challenge. Also, I just found out, photos on steepshot can have up to 20 CATEGORIES! WHAT??? SO, a photo with an intro to this contest on steepshot could blow this thing up. I'm going to start using that today, I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for dropping by to check it tu. That steep shot tip is AWESOME and I’m definitely going to try it out to drive some more attention to this contest in the next day or so! Thank youuuu. <3

P.S. Gave steepshot a go, we’ll see what happens. Will report back if anything interesting.

Cool, I'll check it out, I was trying to determine if I could add a link to that type of post somehow.

Ya, from what I can see it lets you copy in the link, but it doesn’t clickthrough (although it does seem to link my username @lilyraabe which is odd).

Well, that makes sense. It's a tag thing. They disabled hyperlinks to prevent spam promoting, damn them, LOL but they want you to invite your friends to view your work.

That does make sense. I also noticed...it seems to be you can’t edit your work on steepshot. You can edit the post on steemit, but then you have to delete tags over 5 so you lose that benefit. However, you can delete your steepshot post which is interesting. Does that line up with what you found?

I was a reader, as an adolescent, and remember the moment I realized all the heroes I identified with were men. It was a devastating awakening. The ambition, adventure and courage I related to, wasn't meant for me. There was a disconnect between the way I saw myself and the way I was expected to be. I'm going to think long and hard. So many movies I love have strong female characters, but not female leads--The Blues Brothers, for example, is about "the Brothers" but you can't top Aretha Franklin, Carrie Fisher or "The Penguin" for courage, individuality and assertiveness. This is a great contest.

“So many movies I love have strong female characters, but not female leads.” The truth in this statement is too real. Looking forward to seeing what you decide to write on/feature! <3

WOW. a great contest :) thanks for this opportunity

You’re so welcome, hope you submit! <3 <3 <3

That's cool! I will have to think about my submission, but it's definitely on my 'to write' list! :-)

Yessss. I’m stoked you’re participating. :)

Lol you know I have to do a like, top five or somet. LOL nah but i will do this I have so many potential posts waiting in the wings... but this i must do!!

Yay, I am so excited that you’re gonna take part! Thank you for playing. <3 Looking forward to seeing what you pick (I know, so manyyyy right?!).

lol well yes and no haha i just mean that Its a question of which film I'm going to uphold as my feminist standard tbh... so its kind of hard in that retrospect outside of the fact that not that many mainstream films (especially from my childhood) pass.. but tbh its not that hard of a test. but i will save this for my bloog post that im writing ATm

Awesome, can’t wait! :)

resteemd and upvoted. I recently watched a mini series about a town of mostly women. But that's not a movie. It's a mini series. And I just realized I have written such a story. My new book is about a strong woman and her female assistant. I'm a trailblazer and didn't even know it. Now all I need is for someone to make it a movie. :)

Yay @lahvista -- repping strong ladies wherever she goes! :) Hope you can submit something. :) If this goes well I’ll do it again, I’m thinking about running it for short, 5-minute scripts, featuring 2-3 characters, that pass the test.

What an excellent idea for a contest! Thanks for the Bechdel test link, will check out now :-)

Cg

Awesome! You should also check out the Mako Mori test that @didic mentions in his post...its similar but puts more stress on a lady being given a leading role in the film than Bechdel. :) Thanks for stopping by and showing the love.

what a cool contest!!!

@moneyinfant has added your contest to the list Steemit Writing Contests: Issue #22. The list is updated on a daily basis and your contest will remain on the list until its expiration - there's nothing you need to do.

The list was created to save writers the excessive amount of time spent searching through the #contest tag for writing contests. Now they can just come to the list each day, see new contests and use their time doing what they love - writing.

If you'd like to help spread the word about the Steemit Writing Contest List I'd really appreciate a resteem, but it certainly isn't necessary. The project is simply meant to help writers save time and contest creators attract more contestants.

P.S. If you know of any contests I've missed I'd love to hear about them. Thanks!

Awesome, thank you much for creating this project to support new contests like this one! You’re awesome. <3

Awww...I don't know how awesome I am, but I'll agree the project is pretty awesome :)
Hope it brings you some new writers and followers.

Thank you so much! See you around. :)

Hey, great film but you have to write a post like those above to be considered! Check out some of the comments for what other submitters have done for examples. :)

Ok

This is a great idea. The film industry has come a long way, but it has a LONG way to go to bring about something resembling gender equality. Have you heard of Artemis Film Festival? It's a film fest coming up in March that is all about indie film with empowering women!

I hadn’t heard about it, but I just clicked open their website and their mission statement is awesome. Thanks for the tip, looking forward to exploring them a bit more!

I only found this post just now.

I have been writing movie reviews (on here) for over half a year and I realize that most are directed by men. That, of course, doesn't mean that they can't pass this test. Give me some time and I will try to come up with a few of them that aren't named yet.

This is a great challenge! :>)
