By now, you've probably heard of the term "feminism" and it probably means one of two things to you; women trying to put themselves above men or the correct definition "the social, political and economic equality of the sexes". Sadly, the definition of feminism in society is leaning more towards the first definition. This is because there are people who promote this on social media and do things like protest shirtless with writing on their chest that says "NO GOD MY VAGINA", which is all good and dandy except these are the same people who most likely believe that being a feminist means women are better than men. Another issue with this is that there are people out there who say they believe that everyone should have equal rights but they don't consider themselves feminists. And when asked why, they say its because they have misconception about what the word "feminism" really means. Now, you can argue that we shouldn't even be arguing about the definition of a word anyway, but can we really fight for equality without all being on the same page? If half of us are feminists and the other half aren't because of the negative connotation that supposedly comes with the word, then the word "feminism" is part of the problem as to why we're not all fighting the same fight. There are people who literally identify as an "anti-feminist" because they don't think it means equality so shouldn't we be trying to get those people on our team and label themselves as "feminists" so we can all fight the same fight on the same team? Right now, it seems to me that most of us are trying to combat discrimination in different ways and saying the feminists aren't doing it the right way so all we have is a bunch of people shitting on each other which completely defeats the point of feminism. Last fall, I participated in the Women's March on Philadelphia with thousands of others. There I saw men and women all of different ages and even children identifying as feminists with signs supporting their sisters or mothers and wanting them to be treated just as fairly as anyone else. When people tell me that they want equality I automatically assume their a feminist because that is the EXACT definition of the word. So, really, we should all identify as feminists because I can't possibly understand why someone wouldn't want equality for themselves and others. For anyone who doesn't identify as a feminist I really hope you can see what this word actually means and why I am trying so hard to make people understand why this is so important.
