A damaged or blocked fallopian tube prevents sperm from getting to the egg or it blocks the passage of the fertilized egg into the uterus.
Chances of conceiving is possible if only one fallopian tube is damaged or blocked. But very rare if both are blocked or damaged.
Causes of damaged or blocked fallopian tube can include
• Pelvic inflammatory disease - this is an infection of the fallopian tube and uterus due to sexually transmitted infections e.g gonorrhea, chlamydia etc.
• Previous surgery carried out around the abdomen or pelvis, even surgery for ectopic pregnancy, in which there's an implant and development of fertilized egg in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus.
• Pelvic tuberculosis - this is a major cause of tubal infertility all over the world although not common in the United States.
