Happy Festivus!
Air Your Grievances!
Today is December 23rd, also known around the world as Festivus!
Festivus is a secular holiday brought to the world by Larry David's popular sitcom 'Seinfeld'. It serves as an alternative to the pressures and commercialism of the traditional Christmas season. Festivus was actually celebrated by Seinfeld scriptwriter Dan O'keefe's family while he was growing up. It was incorporated into a 1997 episode titled 'The Strike' and became a phenomenon ever since.
Festivus Traditions
and Festivus Miracles!
THE FESTIVUS POLE
Like most holidays, Festivus has a few traditions that go along with it. Instead of a Christmas tree, people celebrate Festivus by displaying a bare aluminum pole. The Festivus pole has a great strength to weight ratio and decorations such as tinsel can be very distracting so it's best to keep it un-decorated.
Airing of Grievances
Immediately following Festivus dinner, people take turns airing their grievances. This consists of going around the table unleashing your problems and telling everyone why they disappointed you in the past year.
Feats of Strength
After the grievances have been aired, the Feats of Strength takes place. The head of the household chooses one person at the table and challenges them to a wrestling match. If the head of the household gets pinned, the holiday is official over.
I remember watching that episode of Senifield...but I did not know that one of the screen writers grew up celebrating festives.
