We eat what we have in stock - 5 - pea soup

in fff •  5 years ago

It's pea soup time!

I make it the old fashioned way with dried split green peas. Once I made it with yellow ones which works fine too.
I started with cooking the peas yesterday. They say a one day old pea soup tastes better. I agree with that.

The reason I use these peas is because I have them in my cupboard.

You can use fresh peas or the ones you can buy in a can/jar too.

Those peas are really tiny.

I had a hard time making a photo of it.

What a surprise. They have exactly the same size as the ones showed on the box.

There's no need to soak the peas first.
2.5 liters of water is needed for the whole package.

If you cook peas there will be foam on it. You have to remove that. I removed three spoons and put the fire low.

After 1-2 hours the peas should be soft and fallen apart.
I added 3 vegetable stock cubes to it (it's meant for 1.5 liters)

After three hours a part of the peas was still hard. I switched off the fire. Later I would finish it.

If pea soup is cold it's very thick you can cut it with a knife.

This is the last "smoked sausage" I have left. It's vacuum-packed and ready to eat. It usually remains good for months. This one I bought last year September and the expiry date is March 15, 2020

The soup was nearly finished.
I added water to it to avoid it would get burned. It needed to be a bit longer on the stove so more peas fell apart.

I added some white pepper and stirred it while going the dishes.

I added a bit of these spices to the soup. They are meant for making rice.

This is what it looks like.

The sausage is cut in pieces and added to the soup.

How to make the old fashioned pea soup?

Ingredients:

  • peas
  • pork chop / pork leg
  • bacon
  • salt/pepper
  • leek, carrot and celeriac and potatoes all cut in small pieces
  • smoked sausage.

Black rye bread with bacon is frequently served with it.

Of course you can make a soup like this without meat and use your own spices. It's what I did. There's no need to buy if I can eat what I have in stock.

nothing like some warm pea or pumpkin soup on a cold day :)

Indeed. Pumpkin soup I only ate once. I guess it's no habit to eat it here. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. I wish you a great day. 💕
