Zor sat at the bottom of the tall metallic cylindrical chamber. Rows of balconies littered the walls. Alongside Zor sat the other galactic translators, their green translucent noodle-like appendages slowly waving and twitching as they received different languages.
Zor faced his assigned balcony. Three humans with stoic expressions were spouting facts and figures on why they should have a certain section of a newly discovered planet assigned to their species for excavation and study. A simple boundary dispute, right; nothing is simple with these obtuse humans. Zor waved his appendages erratically as three different languages bombarded him. Glancing at Zok, another translator to his right, he momentarily lost concentration. Zok's delegates all spoke the same simple language and were in agreeance with what quadrants they wanted to study. Zor puffed up his middle cavity and let out a low rumbling sound. The other translators glanced at him, their tentacles flailing: laughing.
"Screw off guys, I’ve got it way harder than any of you."
More appendages flailed as the translators all looked back to their assigned balconies.
Chairman Zan sat in the middle of the translators, consuming and dissecting the information for best outcomes. He flicked an appendage at Zor. Zor recoiled and resumed his focus on the human delegates.
“We want the north region as it has the greatest collection of phosphor crystals.”
“What we really want are the water vapor fountains in the west quadrant.”
“I’m sure my two cohorts would love nothing more than to study crystals and water vapor but we must have the east region. The rocks there are teaming with bacteria.”
Zor absorbed, translated and relayed the three different languages.
“Well they think it’s the water and the rocks that are important, but the crystals...”
Zor sprang up, supporting himself with his appendages. His mid-section quivered and burst open; a small creature jumped out and then leapt up to the humans' balcony. A laser shot fired, but it was too late. The little creature had embedded itself into one of the human delegates. The human’s scream echoed against the chamber walls.
“Zor, not again! This is unacceptable. Now we have to reconvene the whole assembly tomorrow with new human delegates, aside from disposing of the other two in some kind of accident. That makes it the fourth group this week. The humans are starting to get upset with all these strange disappearances and I'm finding it difficult to cover this all up.” Zan ruffled his green tentacles at Zor.
“Thanks, Zor!”
“Great work, buddy!”
“This guy again...”
The other translators’ thoughts hit Zor as his appendages recoiled.
“Guys I promise, I’ll get a better handle on this. You just can’t imagine dealing with these damn humans.”
I could keep reading if this short story continue as a serie... :) Great work @cizzo, I always enjoy reading you.
