After searching in quite a lot of places and to the point of almost giving up, Jasper eventually found Foxie sitting quietly and scared between bushes not far away from the river. It was starting to get dark and the woods were awfully quiet.
Jasper's legs hurt. He hasn't walked that far in a long time and he could not wait to lay down and rest for a while. Foxie was startled when Jasper's big voice spoke behind him. "My King," said Jasper in a very humble manner. "If you would excuse me, I need to lay down for a second."
Very confused, Foxie looked at Jasper with a very worrying look on his face. "Are you alright, uncle Jasper?" Foxie asked. "You did not have to come and look for me. I saw the man with the gun at your house so I didn't know what else to do."
Jasper was about to say something but while trying to catch his breath, Foxie said: "Hmmm, why do you call me 'my King'? I don't understand." He kept his eyes on Jasper waiting for him to reply.
I'll tell you all in a minute, my King. I just have to..." and with that, Jasper slowly got up and moved forward. He bent his front paws down next to the river bank and proceeded to drink some water for his thirst. When he had enough, he turned around to face Foxie, knowing full well that he would have to explain himself as Foxie had to know what was going on.
"Let me start from the beginning," Jasper started explaining. "Milo and I have been living in this woods for many years now. We know all the stories, all the gossip and we know that there have been magical things happening in the woods since even before we were born. It happens quite a lot that we meet foxes who have seen things in the woods, and when we saw you yesterday, we thought that you might have seen the rainbow as all the other foxes have."
Foxie looked like he was getting excited about the story. He was very interested to know all the details and almost didn't blink.
*"We once read about this legend that one day there would be a fox that would be different from all the rest. He wouldn't be a regular fox, but a very important one indeed because he would be able to see and hear things that no other had seen before, nor ever will."
"And you think that I'm that fox?" Foxie asked with big surprise.
Jasper nodded gently. "In the morning, Milo will take you to Magnus, my King. He has the book and you can read all about it there. Magnus will know what to do."
"No, please, don't call me 'my King'," said Foxie and let his ears down. "Can't you take me? I don't think Milo likes me very much."
"He didn't know who you were at first, but he'll be singing a different tune now," replied Jasper. "It's getting late. We should find you a safe place to spend the night."
