Skylar was in a hurry to get home to get online and geek out. Her bestie just wanted to hang out a little longer for fear of missing out. She unlike her bestie didn’t fear whatever the in crowd was doing lately. The novelty usually wore off real quick. They got bored and nosed dived into the new without an afterthought. Skylar sighed but she stayed with bestie till bestie saw that it was all an illusion. There was nothing to miss out on.

Well this time there was something to be present for and her patience paid off in a way she would have never anticipated. Unfortunately her bestie missed everything when it really mattered. Her trip to Mcdonald’s cost her everything.

Skylar was almost at her wits end when it happened. Suddenly the kids her bestie admired so much and wanted to always be around, started shouting and acting like something awesome was going on in their circle. At first Skylar didn’t pay them no mind and kept her head in her smartphone away from the circle. But as the shouting continued she couldn’t help herself but be curious as to what was really happening. So she left her perch and moved towards the circle of screaming teenagers in the park. As she was a tall girl it was effortless to look over some of the kids and peer directly into the circle. What she saw was too good to be true or even possible in 2019. All the kids in the circle were wearing some kind of hitech glasses. An older girl with green and purple hair sat in the circle manipulating a device which beamed some kind of light, directly and simultaneously to all the glasses the kids wore. And what they were experiencing at the moment had them acting pretty wild and ecstatic. And she was only the one missing out. She gasped when the girl pushed a pair of glasses towards her. She picked it up from the ground and for a moment looked unsure. The girl who was controlling the weird machine looked up at her and nodded.

Skylar thought “Why not”and she put them on like a kid in a candy store and nothing was ever the same again.

Bestie came back and met Skylar wearing strange looking glasses and smiling like she had seen the most beautiful thing in the world.

“Why are you smiling like that?” Bestie asked but Skylar just kept on smiling and then laughed out loud like a crazy person. Bestie laughed a little and looked puzzled.

“Where is everyone” she asked looking around the park. Skylar pointed at her glasses and kept on laughing.

“Are you crazy. What’s going on?” Bestie repeated her voice now sounding slightly worried.

“The future” Skylar replied while pressing a button on the side of the glasses. A second later she disappeared and bestie started screaming.

She was never the same after that. She never saw Skylar again or the circle of kids she could not bear to be apart from. Her fomo nightmare had indeed come true and there was not a damn thing she could do about it.
